I thought they were hysterical with their forebodings of theocracy during the Bush years because Bush seemed like a serious believer. I appreciate the sentiment, Robert. If I were interested in any kind of religion at all, I would probably gravitate towards Paganism, but I can't believe in everything THEY believe in, any more than I can believe in any Christian religion. No, I'll just go along doing what I feel is right, and if there is punishment waiting for me afterwards, so be it.

Here's the thing about the Bible: it's not just the inspired Word of God that believers think it is; it's also a reliable historical source. Non-believers will lampoon and ridicule specific claims for years, and then some archeologist or researcher will prove the Bible correct. It's happened enough times that even the most cynical non-believers should at least accept the historical value of the Bible. The point being, if somebody quotes the Bible to convince you of something, you should stop yelping about the source and listen. They can't "prove" their faith is correct - that's a non sequitur, which is why I doubt that anybody has ever tried. But they can provide perfectly valid evidence that much of the foundation of their faith actually happened.

Again, I doubt it. I've never met a Christian that thought he could prove the existence of God, whether using the Bible or logic or anything else, so the claim by atheists and agnostics that they repeatedly run into Christians trying to do exactly that stretches the limits of credibility. Faith is faith, and it violates the definition of the word to pretend you can prove it.
What I think happens is that the non-believer makes an assertion that can easily be called into question by the historical account given in the Bible, and the non-believer takes that as "the Christian trying to prove the existence of God." Example I have run into many times: the non-believer scoffs at one of the "Hollywood" miracles like the parting of the Red Sea. That's when I would cite the overall accuracy of the Bible which gives credibility to the unproveable parts, and mention the chariot wheels, human bones, and horse bones apparently found in the Gulf of Aquaiba, etc.
J.P., you already believe the Bible, so you have no idea the kind of things that some people will say to convince a non-believer. I've seen plenty of people who absolutely do believe, but have no power of persuasion, no ability to argue using logic and commons sense.
I have had numerous people use quotes from the Bible to prove the Bible's truth. That is flawed logic. God said this about his existence, therefore, he exists. That makes no sense.
I have no problem whatsoever with anyone believing anything they want, as long as they don't try to shove it down my throat, or use it as an excuse to cut my head off. What I'm talking about is flawed logic in an attempt to prove it to me. And still, I don't get upset, I just get a chuckle. I mean no offense, and I take no offense.
I never said anything about the historical value of the Bible. There IS some historical value in the book. But quoting an entity that I don't believe exists in an effort to convince me He exists isn't really going to show me much. It's just a logic thing.
I don't think anyone's trying to convince you of anything other than there is some proof that things in the Bible did indeed happen, religious or not, it's history.
Particularly, that is EXACTLY what the old Testament is. A history oif the Jewish people, and their relationship with God. And as you said, more and more archological finds are showing that it is a fairly accurate history, though of course, the faith thing is unprovable by definition.
I never denied that. Well, in rereading your post, I think it needs one more "some." As in "some proof that some things in the Bible did happen." There's no way I'm taking the Bible as a history book.
As a non-believer I definitely agree with you on that point. However your previous comment is a bit bias. I personally know MANY believers that misquote the Bible as well and at times I have to correct them.
