Who in the SAM hell is Jamie Oliver? And why should anyone give a rats ass? For all I care you could cover him in the pink mystery sauce and feed his body to a bunch of cannibals....I need to come up with a cause, something perhaps to pay for mental health treatments of all the liberals who feel the need to stick their nose into my business.
He is a well known and well respected chef. He champions the idea of more simply cooked, wholesome food, rather than complicated, highly processed stuff. He encourages cooking at home, and using local and/or sustainable foods. What he is advocating is real food, not the crap places like McDonald's serve and CALL food. Some will appreciate whaat he does, since they are unaware of the disasters in our food. Others will feel that the risk i sworth the enjoment they get from consuming some of those things (like I STILL like the occasional Jack in the Box taco, even though it is light years away from a real taco!)
Well that explains why I don't know who he is..I could care less about famous chefs...Another guy looking for his 15 minutes of fame I guess...The funny part is..I have my own garden, I go to farmers markets locally, that's just common sense stuff, and I don't feel the need to get all googly eyed about some guy who needs to tell me what I already know. The department of redundancy department has taken over the food world.
His 15 minutes of fame has lasted about 15 years so far. He has done similar shows in Britain, and has opened culinary schools specifically aimed at kids not doing great in school, or already out and getting in trouble. He teaches them how to work as a team in the kitchen, how to feed themselves well for less money, and how to get along in a job. He also teaches basic cooking classes. You and I still cook, NSS, but you would be appalled at the people whooliterally don't know how to boil water, wouldn't recognize many types of veggies and fruits, much less eat them, and think there is no connection between farm and food supply! He's aimeing at an ignorant audience, not those with enough sense to have figured all this out.
I am not appalled, I see it every day in low income homes all over the place when we end up their for calls for service, most of the trash is fastfood stuff, and lots beer cans, candy bar wrappers, and the like....And a lot of obesity....rose I love your postings, but this is one time I disagree. I don't mean about you, I mean about Oliver, Just because some people can't function and need help, doesn't mean we all need a nanny. And besides, I like an burger from a fast food joint, Some times in my line of work we don't get time to eat cause the calls are stacking up. or we end up at a crime scene for hours and hours and the only thing open is fast food joints. Most of the time I take my own lunch, but I don't always get the pleasure of eating in the office when the street is going to hell. Anyway I got off point, If Oliver wants to help fine, but stop worrying about fast food joints, that's just nitpicking, especially with all the crap going on in today's world, its sometimes just tooo much nanny state stuff for me. Its like warning labels on every dame thing you buy. I was shocked to find out spray cans of paint say "do not spray in your eyes, Preparation H says do not take orally, my gas pumps tell me that drinking gasoline can cause reproductive harm, I mean it never ends, and this is just a pet peeve of mine. :)
Don't get me worng. I eat burgers and fries now and agian too. And when I worked full time, it was not unusual to have peanut butter crackers and tea for dinner. But at least I KNEW that wasn't exactly optimal nutrition, and tried to repair some of the damage in my OTHER meals!
We had a family come repeatedly into one of the ER's I worked in (God I sound like Olivia!) The child had an ear infection that was unresponsive to every antibiotice we offered and folks were getting concerned about the risk of meningitis, long term hearing damage, etc. We checked the med bottles. The mom was giving the child the meds as ordered as far as we could determine. Everyone was scratching their heads when the mother brought the child in one last time. And the triage nurse noted a lot of drainange out of the ear canal. The mother was giving oral meds into the child's ear, since that was where the infection was. If you don't TELL people, I am sorry, but they don't get it. THAT appalls me. What seems like common sense to me is a revelation to some of these people! Part of me wants Darwinism to take over, but I feel for the children, and want them to at least have a chance to be a normal person!
You NEVER EVER sound like Olievia! :)
And I know what your saying about the kids, We got parents who are dumber than their kids after being edumacated in our fine skrewls system. I always try to take time out for them, The parents are sometimes a waste of space and that's not fair to the kids. We have a whole generation that can't function without someone telling them what to do. Dumbed down like you can't believe. and the kids watch and learn from these "fine" parents. So now we have another generation thats gonna be nothing but dependent on Gooberment for handouts...That's what really sucks
Actually, you can get something fairly close to a Jack in the Box taco in Mexico, just ask for a taco dorado. Yes, the ones in Mexico are better, but I've been eating J in the B tacos since I was a kid, and I'm not going to stop now.
Loves me some kangaroo, cooked over a wood fire. Used to be a restaurant right near where I lived in Joshua Tree, CA, that had a sampler plate of kangaroo, alligator, and rattlesnake. Mmmmmm.
Lemme guess. Taste just like chicken.
Never tried 'roo, but 'gator tastes like 'gator and snake tastes like, well, snake.
Rattlesnake chili. . . mmmmmmm. But it has to simmer for a while or the snake is a little chewy!
No, none of that trio tastes like chicken. The kangaroo is kind of like beef, though. Some very good tender beef, with lots of flavor.
Emu is like very lean beef.
How fortunate we are that this meddler saved us from ourselves.
He's so brave to stand up to the McEvils of the world. Do you think he'll try and change any such things in the Far or Middle East?
Was under the impression that McDonalds used 100% Kangaroo meat.
If they did I would eat there, 'roo meat is pretty good.
I don't eat at Mickey D's anyway so who cares? I'll take the local greasy spoons green chili cheeseburger any day, so good the juice runs down your arms while eating it.
I love eating at McD's -- but I love eating other food, too. Everything in moderation.
I don't appreciate him saying this stuff is suitable for dog food. When my dog was alive he ate way better than that.
Well, ammonium hydroxide sure sounds awful but I don't want to jump to conclusions, especially when there's a TV performer trying to make a name for himself invovled. I know a poison of sorts is used to remove caffeine from coffee beans but the poison is washed out before further processing and decaffinated coffee is safe to drink. I DON'T know if something similar might be going on here but I would want to hear from someone with actual knowledge, not media twirps, before making coming to a conclusion. Think Toyota Prius, the Audi "unexpected acceleration" canard, etc, etc.
It is a commonly used ( or was commonly used) way to make use of meat scraps not otherwise usable as food. Driven by the ever popular drive for profits at all costs, it enables them to wring a few more dollars out of the meat they purchase, as well as the customers they serve, who for the most part, were clueless what was in the meat they were eating. And you bitch about a little soy at Taco Bell?
well yeah, soy reduces testosterone levels.
The bigger the chemical name, the SCARIER it is for the idiots the demagogues, yellow journalists, and muckrakers pander to.
If they called it "ammonia", people might just think that it is a base used to draw the water content out, but these are the same people that tried to ban that nasty "dihydrogen monoxide" a few years back. Pretty nasty stuff -- it kills a lot more people every year than a lot of the liberal bugbears out there. More, even, than all the Priuses and Volts combined!
[bucktoothed moron voice] "Why just the other day, My cousin's sister's boyfriend's best friend said she knew somebody that heard a couple kids talking in the hall about somebody that *inhaled* dihydrogen monoxide at the swimming pool!" [/bucktoothed moron voice]
I dunno why I settled on Frankenberry to pick on, but he *is* a good sample from the bucktoothed moron statistical group.
...and just so the ladies in the crowd know, you put ammonium hydroxide on your head every time you get a perm. That''s why they stink so bad. Mr. Clean uses it all the time, too, and nearly every farmer puts it in the ground to make crops grow.
No, not going to eat it any time soon, but, then, I won't be eating a lot of things, on account of they taste bad.
I think fertilizer contains more nitrogen than ammonia, but then I'm no longer growing veggies at home! And one reason I DON" perm or color my hair is to avoid that ammonia! Don't use Mr. Clean either. Stick with vinegar, soap, water and lemon oil, depending on the job!
BTW, it depends upon the fertilizer. The farmers were knifing anhydrous ammonia into the ground in the fall which is basically straight, dry ammonia. (that's why it is 'anhydrous'. If you had that sprayed on you, it'd do a nasty to any exposed skin.
There's three main ingredients in fertilizer -- nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. (NPK), and ammonia is a good source of nitrogen. The anhydrous unites with the water in the soil to "fix" the nitrogen at a place useful to the plants. A lot of science involved. The atmosphere being 80% nitrogen, you have to do something to make it usable for plants.
(That's why I laugh at all the tire places offering to fill my tires with nitrogen. I just tell them that I'll use the standard 80% mix, and enjoy their blank looks.)
The nitrogen filled tires always cracked me up. They act like it will make your car appreciable lighter and therefore get better gas mileage!
Want better gas mileage? Take out the damned ethanol!
For even better gas mileage, don't let my boy drive it. He has a lead foot.
It is always best to stick with the basics for cleaning.
The only reason that things like this get traction is because of the scary chemical name. The only reason that this is true is because they purified the chemicals enough that they could legally be referred to by name -- which was done, incidentally, to protect us. Some of the effective chemical names in soap, lemon juice, and other household cleaners, if purified to that same point, would be a heck of a lot scarier.
Years ago, I had a formula book that dated from the innocent 1930's that listed the chemicals used in everyday things you might buy at a drug store or soda fountain. It gave me a heck of a lot of perspective on it.
I kind of file what McD's did here under "Yeah, meat processing is gross." Just because they use weird animal parts in hot dogs doesn't mean that there were none left to use in hamburger. Best not to think too much about it, or you'll either start to butcher your own or become vegan.
There's a lot that happened between feedlot and Styrofoam tray, and none of it is pretty.
It gets a *lot* worse when you start talking about what goes into makeup. [shudder]
Trust me. You just don't want to know. Really. Fish scales in lipstick to make it sparkly is by far the least awful thing they use.
That's nice. Now maybe he can go do something about Britain's legendary cuisine, like blood pudding, kidney pie, and haggis.
"Here, brother, let me pluck that mote of dust from your eye."
At least try to get some of the name right, it is Steak and kidney Pie, Black Pudding!
At least we don't give a crap!
At least haggis, kidney pie and blood pudding don't have weird chemical additives that were never intended to be consumed!
No, they disgust me just fine as they are. No need for the turbo button on these. ;-)
You *do* know the real reason why the lions in the London Zoo sit around licking each others' asses, don't you?
The keepers fed them the local cuisine, and now they're trying to get the taste out of their mouths.
