Volvo introduces new pedestrian airbags

• No lie- 9 out 10 time when a car cuts me off it has an Obama sticker.

• I was hit by a car when I was 16. A Ford Gran Torino, 1973. Think Starsky and Hutch. That bad boy was a solid piece of iron. That's the way they made them in those days. My motorcycle and I had no chance of coming out of that one in good shape. He T-boned me at 55 mph, and I wiped out his hood with my head and upper body, while the motorcycle and my lower body were taking care of his grill and bumper. Then the motorcycle and I went under the car, where we proceeded to get hung up on the undercarriage and dragged until somebody finally got the old man's attention and got him to stop. Yeah, that's right, he didn't know he hit me.

  In my honest and experienced opinion, the biggest safety improvement that could be made would be to get bad drivers on the bus, instead of behind the wheel. According to the off-duty officer that was driving behind this guy, he was doing 55 in a 35 zone, and was pretty much oblivious to his surroundings.

      And yes, I did go through some hard times over that accident. But I also think that the hardship of building my leg back up and learning to walk again had an overall effect on my life. Even the doctor that did the 7 operations to put it back together said he'd noticed a big change in me over the years. Maybe that's one reason I don't accept lame excuses from people who can't get it together.

• Just based on the track record of man vs car I fail to see what the objective of this device is exactly. I'd venture to say it would keep most of the splat off your windshield and billions of bugs out there will be crying discrimination. PETA will be suing for "bug rights" and next thing you know exterminators will be going out of business. Yep just one big domino effect because Johnny just couldn't look both ways before stepping out in traffic.

• "Throw another log on the fire" when the car goes up in smoke?. Oh wait, they plan to install fire extinquishers too? What about a mister system?

• Obviously Big Airbag has a lot of influence with the Feds just as Big Backup Camera does.

  • BINGO! How long will it be before some idiot mandates that these things be standard equipment on all cars? I guess people like that will do everything possible to bring the cost of ordinary cars up close to the cost of those high dollar hybrids?

    • They want to drive the cost of cars up along with the cost of oil. What better way to get people out of those nasty cars and make the greentards happy.
