Vt. Sen. Leahy to seek maple syrup protection law

Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT) plans to introduce legislation to make it a federal felony offense for people to mislabel products as containing maple syrup. “Leahy announced his plan at the same time he was announcing the state had received a $70,000 federal grant to help market Vermont maple syrup.” We think the real goal here is to put The Onion out of business by making it impossible to write satire.

Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

  • Big Syrup! That's hilarious. Of course, knowing Leahy as a bit of a knee-jerk reactionist and a huge opportunist, I'm not surprised at this. He never met a handout or bit of pork he didn't like. I'm not in support of the legislation at all, and think it's foolish. It just adds to Vermont's moonbat reputation and it makes me sad to see a once-fiercely independent state become such a bunch of whiners.

    But having said that.....people all over the world look for and expect that when they see a container of syrup it's 100% from Vermont. Yes, I know there are plenty of other states and eastern Canada that produce just as much, if not more syrup by volume than my tiny home state but producers have worked hard to maintain a product of high quality. When other syrup producers attempt to glom on to that reputation and screw the consumer, that hurts Vermont producers' reputations.

    As a Vermonter, maple syrup and sugar making is close to my heart. I live 3500 miles away now and still get my syrup from a small family-owned operation in my hometown. Yes, I could go to my local Trader Joe's and get syrup, but it's coming from Quebec or even Wisconsin. (Does that makes me a syrup snob? :'} )

  • Vermont is #51 in GDP when you include DC in the mix. Syrup, paper mill and insurance are their economic power houses. I guess he's protecting his constituents. I'll guess Obamacare will destroy most of the insurance jobs. Leahy voted against Obamacare. Wait. No? Dang I had a trail of logic going there and it fizzled out. I guess Big Syrup owns this guy.
