W outpolls Obama

PPP poll shows Bush 43 at 45/46 while Obama at 46/49. “Sure, the numbers fall within the margin of error. But what a difference 3 years make. The longer Barack Obama is president, the better George Walker Bush looks.” The longer Barack Obama is president, the better Mickey Mouse looks.

Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one.   • In an unenlightened time, people would put their feet up on desks or whatever, and nobody thought a thing of it. However, apparently, we’ve been told that it is some kind of insult to certain members of a certain culture/religion. This happened around the shoe-throwing episode in W’s presidency — and the Left was so full of glee for every minor detail regarding that insult that they don’t have much of an excuse for not knowing this.

    When there is an awareness that something can be taken wrong, people that continue on as before open up the floor to speculation that the insult is intentional. It is like being taught that an epithet we use in innocence is a serious insult. Once you know that, then you can’t use it in innocence anymore. As an example, my daughter used to gesture a *lot* with her middle finger. As she was two, nobody made a big deal about it — it just happened to be the finger she felt was handy to point with. Once she got older, we told her not to do that — and if she did, to face the consequences.

    Since this is the administration with mistranslated reset buttons, traveling to all 57 states, including ‘Road island’, I’m going to write it off as an amusing example of more incompetence and buffoonery on the part of this administration.

    This has nothing to do with insulting people by showing the backs of one's shoes, and you know it. That's a cultural norm that has nothing to do with Americans who aren't of recent Middle Eastern ancestry. Your argument is like saying, "Now that it's common knowledge that Muslim women traditionally veil their hair with a hijab, I'm going to start being offended every time I see an American woman going bareheaded."

    Come on, Perlcat! Try to show a little consistency, at least. Either it's intolerably boorish for a president to put his feet on the Oval Office desk (in which case Bush and Ford are just as guilty as your favorite scapegoat), or it isn't. So which is it going to be? You can't have it both ways.

            Taking a tip from bubba clinton, make sure there are no cameras operating while doing something in the Oval office than others might frown upon. LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Bush, Bush and Obama have all had photos of their shoes on the desk. I can't recall carter, Reagan or bubba pictured doing the same. Could be my brain faltering as our resident trolls would attest. St. Kennedy knew when to keep the cameras away... most of the time! Ike was president for a few years after I was born, but I really don't remember his conduct in office at all!

          • I have seen pictures of Bubba, but not Reagan. With his back problems, I'm not sure Kennedy COULD throw his feet up on the desk.

          • Well there i think you identify the problem. Olivia put up a link to a page that has the picture in it. Its only off-topic by a very restrictive set of rules. I don't know what the Internet is good for if you can rely on that strategy.

            However, it was a Snopes page and that's the real issue here. I can dig that. I learned a long time ago not to use wikipedia, snopes, etc, here. I like to do site-restricted searches in Google (sticking to wsj, rcp, fox, etc..) I can't find any juicy ones with presidential deskfeet though (not in 20 lazy seconds, at least)

            Perhaps Olivia misidentified the path the meme took to implant itself here. I only care, to a point, how it got here. Carrier pigeons or archangels might deliver it, and I'll still going to wonder why its OK for one president, but not another

            Its definitely easier to argue against rage over such a thing as deskfeet. Otherwise, I can't logically counter the political strategy of ridicule, when employed against one's opponents. Satire and lampooning are time-honored (and protected) traditions.

            Its hard for me--sometimes--to distinguish genuine hatred and ire from lampooning. Probably for Olivia as well. And probably for some of you all when it comes to your more traditional political allies (Republican pols generally). Bush clearly got eviscerated himself. So this is good food for thought

          • I never thought about doing the shoes on the desk thing until I had a big desk in a private office during my last enslavement to the corporate world. A printing company in Milwaukee, founded in 1885 by the German grand father and his brother of the man that owned the company when they brought me on.
            A couple years after my employment they moved me to IT manager. Nice, big old desk! The old fellow that owned everything was born in 1904, as I recall. Our accounting software had trouble with his birthdate which gave me a reason for an early start of Y2K issue resolution.
            He was a really cool guy. Funny as all get out with an incredibly subtle and rye humor. His advice to me regarding shoes on the desk was my first on the topic; don't.
            There should be a small booklet issued to occupiers of the government issued buildings regarding the care and keeping of the furnishings. Or maybe they ought to put that funky plastic protective covering on everything!

            It's fair game for ridicule, but I'm not taking it as the insult that many people might. I just figure that he's another garden-variety boor who can't resist the urge to put his filthy feet on an antique with historical significance. Since the WH is swarming with antiques like that, it isn't that big of a deal -- if you take the logic too far, he will have to wear plastic baggies on his feet to protect the carpet.

            You didn't actually look through the Snopes page before barging forth to defend Paden's remark, did you, Poopajoe?

            If you had, you would have seen photographic evidence that both Ford and Bush Jr. put their feet up on the Oval Office desk at one time or another.

            You see, that's the big problem some of you have: you glom onto some fiery e mail propaganda, and don't even bother to check it out for accuracy before you rush to parrot it here. And, 99 times out of 100, those e mails are either flat out lies or half truths.

          I also strangely recall.. There's a culture somewhere that takes high offense at viewing the bottom of another's feet. Deskfeet are an obvious risk point. I want to say its somewhere in Asia? Maybe Arab or Turk or some Muslim culture?

            You must have been brought up in the Middle East, ex-Dean. Because, while putting one's feet up is obviously an informal stance, I've never heard of Americans getting offended at seeing other people's shoe soles. I hope you don't belong to a church where people are required to kneel (thereby exposing their shoe soles to the people behind them). How would you ever be able to concentrate on the service?

THe latter was both a matter of cleanliness and also of taling care of the furniture, instead of trashing it. She inherited my grandmother's sofa, and I inherited it from my mother. It l;asted over 60 years with constant use, because we took care of it.

            I was taught the same. But, then again, girls have traditionally been taught to be more careful about putting their legs or feet up in public (especially when wearing a dress) for obvious reasons. And, let's be honest: putting one's shoes up on an upholstered sofa isn't the same thing as perching them against a bare wood surface.

            Be that as it may, spreading out, and putting one's feet up on a desk, as well as (men) sitting with knees spread wide apart, are very American stances. I can't imagine Nicolas Sarkozy, or Vladimir Putin, for example, sprawling out in a desk chair, can you? That doesn't mean that it's right or wrong----it's just a cultural thing.

            But, of course, if you want to bitch about Obama, and can't find anything of substance to criticize, I guess you have to resort to petty carping like this. What's going to be next----resurrecting that tired old gripe that he was caught without a flag pin in his lapel on April 23, 2008? Or that his wife wore a bracelet at a state banquet in 2010 that you think is too expensive looking for the likes of her?

          • Tis true, taxpayers had nothing to do with the coffee-table, or my desk. But I only provided the visual to illustrate the nigh autonomic behavior involved. My brain sent a signal to my feet that I wasn't even aware of

            My parents raised me just fine, this just wasn't one of the big lessons, I suppose. Now, I've seen managers and executives doing the same things in their offices on their own desks during meetings. If you put a gun to my head, i would not be able to plausibly guess at anyone who was offended. Its a quick way to take pressure off the lower back.

            The issue is curious to me. I'm reminded of people being upset about wearing hats in buildings, and my own experience with having to remember to remove my cover in Basic. Civilians don't think about it much. Or who wears white after Labor Day? Or who even thinks about it?

            I also doubt many are concerned about offending Muslims, here.
