Want a search engine that doesn’t track you? Try DuckDuckGo. We’d like one that isn’t a political partisan or conduct psychological experiments on us as well, but no tracking is a good start.

Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

  • I wouldn't use chrome as a browser either if you can avoid it. Will have to go with IXquick or Startpage.

  • I figured something wasn't right when I moved back to the frozen wasteland seven years ago and my Google searches for retail shopping sent me to sites in the UK and completely ignored the ones that were 30 miles due south in the USA.

    I know we spend a great deal of our lives frozen, but we're not complete idiots, eh. Except for the Liberals. There's just no hope for them.

  • Off topic, has anyone else gotten emails overnight for posts that are months old?
    Something is just weird.

    • I stopped tracking threads, clearing posts from the oblivious one was getting tedious.

      My guess is she is reviving dead threads just to spew drivel. Not that she has ever been known to do that........

      • Forget what the word is, I call it "pocket mail". They could go down the line and respond to every comment on a thread and make 30 separate posts; they all go to that threads "pocket". Next time I check mail all 30 are inside 1 Email in the inbox and I can skim, click through to respond or delete the whole thing from there. Keeps things tidy.

    • That would probably be me :P the weird part I mean. Found a couple follow-ups to old stories in the wee hours.

  • I tried it too, but once you find what you are looking for, you leave their protection, and you are being tracked again. That is why I set my computer to only accept cookies if I let it.
