From the descriptions, they almost sound like gang members.
This is entirely due to New York's draconian gun laws. Anywhere else in America, or at least in most parts of America, we simply shoot raccoons that become troublesome. Raccoons are ornery critters, especially the males. They think they're bears and will stare you down if you politely ask them to leave, but fortunately they're smart enough to get the message if you start shooting them.
A BB gun should do the job of keeping them out of your yard.
They're cute when they're little.
I few years ago my pit bull treed 2 of them in the backyard. They wanted nothing do to with her.
You're lucky, they tend to have a very high incidence of rabies.
