• The Titanic was a great ship ride, the Hindenburg was a great blimp ride, and General Custer had a very successful battle at the Little Big Horn. Oh and the Japanese love the atomic bomb. Makes as much sense at Jugears and his designated liar.

    • Colonel when he died, Major General during the Civil War. In retirement and posthumously we tend to refer to people by their highest attained title... which, sadly, means we still have to call Bill "President Clinton" and Hillary "Secretary Clinton" even though they both sucked at those jobs.

        • When big wars end the military downsizes. There aren't enough spots for everybody who wants to stay in and make a career of it. So they either take a demotion, or retire and become a civilian. It's not as bad as it sounds -- during a war you generally advance really really fast (if you stay alive), so after the war when you take the demotion, you're probably still further ahead than you would have been otherwise at that point in your life. Custer was dead last in his class at West Point. He probably considered himself lucky as hell to be a colonel and have troops to lead against the ignorant savages... until those ignorant savages turned out to be better military leaders than he was.

        • I'll expand on JP's post KQ, from my own experience. When I got to Cambodia I was an E-4, called a third class petty officer. As others transferred out or were killed I was given something called a "field promotion" due to my length of time in country. I was an E-6, a first class petty officer when I was shipped back to the world then lost that designation because I was no longer in a war zone.

          I was "demoted" back to third class status but it really wasn't a demotion because I had never been officially raised in rate. Field promotions are a way for commanding officers in a war zone to let the rest of the troops know that this person is now in charge but it actually means very little. What it did do for me was put me on the fast track to make E-5, a second class petty officer, which I made within 6 months of returning home.

          I know it sounds complicated, hell, it's complicated for those of us who have served, but overall the system works very well.
