I'll be looking for one of those, a good way to heat up a crucible to melt some lead ingots for casting some slugs.
Well now, that's an application I never would have thought of.
Interesting but hardly astonishing -- Fresnel lenses -- lighthouses use them to direct their light into tight beams visible for 25+ miles. And though the "free" part of salvaging a big ol' Fresnel out of a TV is attractive, I'm sure they're commercially available too.
