World’s dumbest high-tech billionaire’s new idea. We never get tired of chronicling the way Bill Gates vomits money into stupid ventures, from re-invented toilets to unsanctioned climate experiments to giant tubs for stopping hurricanes. Now he wants to redesign the condom.

I haven't really read this particular article, but I know the story from elsewhere. His basic premise is that if condoms feel better, more dudes all over the world will use them. Plus, graphene is a pretty cool molecular arrangement.
I really don't see the problem?
It's the totality of his work. With every stupid idea he throws money at, he further demonstrates that all the money he acquired as proprietor of Microsoft was a fluke. It's habit for people to sit and listen to a billionaire as though every word he speaks is engraved on a stone tablet, but if you ever have a chance to listen to Bill Gates give a speech, do so. He's really not very bright, and when a not-very-bright guy assumes his accumulation of money is proof that he's smart, it's ugly to watch. When you add the fact that Bill Gates is often speaking to a room full of certified tech geniuses, the juxtaposition of a stupid guy pretending to be smart while talking down to actual geniuses is enough to make you regurgitate.
As the saying goes, sometimes it's better to be lucky than smart.
Bill got lucky, but he never got smart.
I wonder if his condoms will work as well as some of the windows programs....Freeze up, shut down..hmmmmmm
Take it off, put it back on,....
I agree. He was in the right time in the right place and had the right people to help him. He is awful.
This seems unduly harsh.. I'm missing the core of what's behind this ire towards him is. He's given almost $30B of his own personal wealth to fund his charity foundation..
At best, the criticism i usually find about this charitable work is triggered by the enormous size of his expenditures, and how it distorts global "charity markets". That's just a criticism of raw power, however.
He may be losing his faculties now, and in possession of outdated thinking regarding a fast moving tech industry, but he was certainly sharp enough back in 70s to seize opportunity and grow a business like crazy. I wish i was 1/10th as savvy in my 20s
Take a look at where that charitable giving is aimed. It mostly goes to leftwing causes rather than objective charities. Global Warming, etc. Why do you think he's down in New Mexico spraying "sun-reflecting chemicals" into the air? He thinks he can cool the planet, the dumbass. And even dumber he thinks that would be a good idea. Does he go to Africa and use his enormous wealth and influence to promote the free enterprise system that made him wealthy? No, he goes to Africa and promotes abortion, as though human beings should be measured on the liability side of the ledger instead of the asset side. That's evil, pure and simple.
Three things you should take note of with these leftwing billionaires and their charitable giving: one, they "pledge" the money, they don't give it outright, and there's no legal commitment for them to live up to the pledge; two, they announce the pledge with tremendous fanfare and hullabaloo to gain themselves stature, the opposite of what the Bible recommends for charity; and three, they seem to find endless ways to maintain control of the money they supposedly gave away. The Rockefeller Foundation, for example, is still ruining this country a century after it was established. Even when these leftwing foundations give away money, they do it in such a way and with so many strings attached that they keep power in their own hands. Look at this condom deal: a true philanthropist would give money to a college, if he thought that was a good place for charity, without specifying they must spend it on a new condom.
TBH i forgot about the sun-reflecto plot..
Also, i don't think its that dumb to think you can cool the planet with tech. That's just terraforming, and if I rejected that, i'd be rejecting all sorts of scifi I've accumulated over the years. Its just a matter of engineering and scale.
On the other hand, yeah its dumb to think you should be cooling the planet, or do any kind of intervention without better understanding the consequences. I agree with you there.
I don't really care much if people make note of their charity. It doesn't seem like he's being a complete douchelord about it
As for abortions.. Yeah, that's always a tragedy, as is regional overpopulation. A massive uptake in condom use, globally, would prevent a lot of abortions
I don't resent Gates for Microsoft but I do take issue with some of his causes especially Common Core. I don't like the central planning and I don't like the extremely limited scope of CC. It is a curriculum designed to create functional but not educated people.
alrighty i'll check out CC.. i thought that was a Governors' thing, and not even all states were onboard.
What else? Seriously, I expect a real shitshow here, to counter the seeming good he's done on other fronts (AIDS, vaccinations, clean water, etc..)
CC is top down but the states have discretion. The Gates are two of the prime movers behind it. Climate change is also another cause he has invested in. My biggest concern with Gates is that he is a big government guy who, in my observation, does not think people are capable of managing their lives without intrusion.
He is a modern Vanderbilt or Ford. Shades of gray. People who change the world are never all bad or all good. I won't demonizes him but I am wary.
i can dig that.. So you say he has raw progressive leanings (activist, interventionist government and all) and it makes sense you'd be wary
In a nutshell.

This is why Common Core needs to go. It originates at the Department of Education, which makes disseminating crap like this easy and efficiently done. I came across another story where a CC GED essay question began with, as a statement of fact, that the 9/11 hijackers were poor Afghanis:

*demonize. Edit feature crapped out.
Funny. This story reminds me of a case study I did in grad school. It was a marketing class where the study involved a company that wanted to introduce more condom usage in India. I don't remember the details but through clever marketing and advertising enough men in India started using the condoms to generate some healthy profits.
LOL.. the company i work for made big plays in India last year--to big effect too. I need to figure out something to sell them. Like a Hindi Bollywood Adventure Game for Android, or some shit.. Their mobile markets are growing like crazy
I think someone should make a replica hat and send it to Bill to wear.
Gates needs to get in one of those full body condoms and duct tape the open end shut.
That's a great story on Emily Ratajkowski on the bottom of the page.
Yes, a double feature.
Much emphasis on double.

Ok, where do I go to see the footage of that? I'm fascinated by,....um,.....weather.
I wish I knew.
It's okay with me, as long as he doesn't try to make Sandra Fluke pay for them.
I wouldn't even mind that as long as they don't make me use them on her!
