Young mother defends self and baby, kills intruder

Young Mother Defends Self and Baby, Kills Intruder. ABC saw fit to throw in “pistol-packin’ mama” jibes and a gratuitous Dirty Harry reference, but it sounds to us like she showed calm and restraint and only killed because she was presented with no other choice. Vaya con dios, amigo. We salute your bravery.

  • Join the NRA. They'll send you a magazine every month, and along with all the other great articles, there's a page full of examples of ordinary people all over the country doing just what this fine lady did. Taking responsibility for her own safety, and the safety of her child. Bravo, young lady.

    • I haven't been on the NRA fold for a few years now. Member for years but never a 'Life membership', some three year hitches and annual too. The thing that pist me off about NRA was the 75 to 100 pounds of mail each year asking me for more money.

I do support their cause and would join up again if I could afford it, but that constant junk mail thing is ridiculous. I recommend NRA to anyone that loves freedom and America. Second Amendment Foundation was a good one too. Are they still around?

      • I agree. The constant junk mail asking for more and more money was enough for me. Same with Ducks Unlimited. I dont remember now, but I think I was getting calls from professional fund raisers (the guys that keep 90+%) on their behalf as well. Pretty stupid on their part.

        • I don't worry too much about fundraisers. I just tell them no, and use the requests that came in the mail for firestarter. NRA has sold us down the river on a few points, but I'm a life member because I believe that the more members the NRA has, the more respect gun owners can demand from politicians. And I liked the magazine.

          • Of course, how much is being spent on theose fundraisers? Could be that the money could be better used elsewhere. People generally give what they can, when they can. And no flurry of snail mail will change that.

          • The young lady in this article is the best damned fundraiser the NRA could possibly have! And it didn't cost a thing!

            Need more of it!

      • When the NRA started supporting gun registration then waiting times for those who want to buy a weapon I quit them. You either support the 2nd amendment or not, there are no halfway measures.

  • I LOVED This story! 18 years old, a 3 month old baby, her husband just died on CHRISTMAS, and then this. She calmly waited for him to enter, then shot his ass. Good girl!!!! PS he was a young whoite guy. Suspected of being after her late husband's pain meds.

    • She's a strong gal -- she's been through the mill. I hope and pray for her to have a better life. She deserves it -- and she inspires us all.

    • If I was about 40 years younger I would go for the young lady in no time! A pistol packing woman at home while your are at work? Ain't nothing easier on the mind than that.

  • I hope she followed the "When in Doubt Rule". Which is, When in doubt, empty the magazine.

  • The media is just making a mockery of this brave woman because it's such a great argument for fewer gun laws. The woman protected herself and her son when the police couldn't. She's a little thing. All alone. No hope in hand-to-hand with a man armed with a knife.

    • Just remember, when SECONDS count, the cops are just MINUTES away. (BTW, I typed that, & have heard that, BEFORE I saw the 2nd responce posted)

This mother should also be mother of the year. We need MORE stories like this, many more. But you are right about the MSM when they cover stories like this. Keep in mind, many of them live in & work in, secured buildings.

      • According to the article she was on the phone with the 911 operator for quite a while, about 21 minutes, before the law showed up. The "cop around the corner" stuff may work in a city but all of us that live in the rural parts of the country know that it may take as much as an hour for a lawman to get to your house.

This young lady did what any of the women living in my area of the state would do, protect herself, her child, her property. The law is a long way from any of us, folks do what we need to do.

  • The '21 foot rule" is well known, We drilled for it in "tactical" pistol class.

It is AMAZING how much distance an attacker can cover in the time it takes to see the threat, assess the threat, draw a weapon and if necessary fire.

Here in my state you have the right to assume if an intruder has the cojones to enter a occupied dwelling "they" intend on doing you bodily harm.

    Good on her!

    • AS A firearms instructor I drill my guys in this all the time, I try not to let any of them get comfortable with the 21 foot rule. I know it's out there but in reality, that 21 feet is a split second when you don't have a weapon out. Even the tinniest hesitation can get you stabbed, We train, and I urge others to train, to draw while backing slowly in order to maintain a distance of 25 to 30 feet. No harm, in learning how to fire and HIT the target while moving to a position of cover. And train yourself to be aware of where you have been, so you can move left right or back without tripping over something. Now there is no law or rule that says you have to back up and give ground, but any distance you can gain is a real tactical advantage.

The other problem with some training is they do the "two shots and holster stuff". You get muscle memory and you do that as in this case where there were two suspects, and you can get just as dead. Train to keep your target covered even after you have fired enough rounds to neutralize the target.

Train yourself to be aware of the empty gun and to quickly reload, and maintain cover on the target.

Most shootings, at least in law enforcement, as close quarters, hitting a target from 25 years is great, but train to also shoot from 3 to 5 yards quickly and on target.

I got a T-shirt from the U.S. Marshall's after going thru some training, "Two to the Chest, one to the head, we would like them alive but we'll take em dead".

If any of you are serious, train that way. As for this young lady, I would be honored to have her on my team any day of the weak. Even after all she has been through, she still kept a level head and did what had to be done. I wish her the best. God Knows she could use some good news in her life.

      • Good info, Notso. We also trained from the 3, 5, 10, and 15 yd. lines. I shoot 25 yds. and beyond when I go to the range to keep in practice. We did tactical reloads constantly, and emergency reloads, learned how to clear type I,II,and III malfunctions under time pressure, went through a live fire shoot house and learned to clear the house, doorways, hallways and corners, etc. In the more advanced classes they offer, they teach you to move, shoot from concealment and/or cover (which is obviously better), and they have a man on man competition through a shoot house using paint marking cartridges (9mm, .40,.45). You have to get "Graduate" or better on a skills test they put you through at the end of a 2 or 4 day handgun course to move into the advanced classes. I missed Graduate by 1 point my last time there, so my goal this year is to make a better score and move into the advanced classes. From plinking at the range for several years to learning sight picture, sight alignment, trigger control, and the muscle memory that comes from practicing, I'm very happy w/what I've learned in just 2 classes. There was no pressure from the Instructors, just good teaching and training, and for me , it's all about personal achievement and practicing what I have learned to this point. It's a great place. They didn't teach us "two shots and holster", rather they taght us to keep firing until there is no longer a threat-thus the head shot, if needed. we also learned that handguns in general are lousy self defense weapons (ie: perp loaded on crank or PCP can take several shots without much effect), but I can't carry a rifle or shotgun concealed very well so handguns are what most gun owners choose for protection.

    • In the handgun classes I took last year we were taught to put 2 shots to the thorasic cavity at 7 yards in 1.5 sec. from concealed holster. If the threat is still advancing, 1 shot to the head, between the upper lip and eyebrows. Of course these are static targets, and everything changes in the real world. Good job by this young lady. She did exactly what she had to do to protect heself and her child.

  • In Hawaii…

she would have been arrested, booked, photod & mandatory jailed for 24 hours.

her firearm would be confiscated untill released by the Proscuter which might take 3 years.

All other firearms would also be confiscated`

    Thank God for Texas

    • She'd be labeled a racist and a bigot(sp?) if this would have happend in Arizona and the perps were Illegals. Not that I'm saying they were.

    • Actually it occurred in Oklahoma. She never should have had to retreat to a bedroom from this guy. He broke into her home and she had ever right to defend herself and her young son. The person killed had been stalking her since her husband had died a few months earlier.

As for the arrest and confiscation in Hawaii, that is what happens when a liberal judicial system is in place. As a duly sworn officer, I tell everyone, by the time any of us arrive. The incident is over and we are left with the aftermath of it. So you need to take measures to protect yourself and be proficient at them.

      • Isn't it pathetic that she felt she had to ask permission to shoot the mutt? In a sane world she could have just shot the sob and then called and asked for someone to come over to help clean up the mess.
You enter someone else's house without permission and get your ass blown away, tough shit.

        • Well hey its a little girl. She did the right thing, but I'd hate to think she was like strictly business about it. I mean I'd do the same thing in the same situation, but lets not ourselves be cold-blooded killers, no matter the reason.

Even Matt Dillon hated the job a lot of the time, ya know?
