Australian store to charge people for browsing

Australian store to charge people $5 for browsing. At first we thought this was the stupidest idea we’d ever heard. Then we saw the brilliance of the concept. So from now on we’d appreciate it if you would automatically send $5 to us every time you browse IHTM. Twenty thousand pages views a day times five bucks equals $100,000 per day. That would not only pay for our monthly server fee, but would leave enough to pay for the Administrator’s kids’ college loans and the Editor’s severe almond milk habit. Browse, baby, browse. And give ’til it hurts.

  • Having worked in a convenience store I know how the guy feels. People come in to use the restrooms and make a mess that I had to clean up. Sometimes I would think that if this is the way they act at home I wouldn't get near their house, especially the toilet.

Then they bring in their kids and let them run wild. Taking things off the shelves then laying it down somewhere else, like the floor. Spilling soda all over the place, opening packages of something they don't want to buy, bothering other customers, the list goes on and on.

I used to tell my boss we should charge $10 bucks for a key to the restrooms then keep it if the slobs trashed the place. Add another $10 to take care of the losses from spilled drinks and opened packages, which cannot be sold. Then add another $10, non-refundable, for having to listen to all the whiny brats while you are trying to find the money to pay for what didn't get spilled or dropped on the floor! Finally, another $10 bucks for me because I have to "be nice", put up with the crap, then clean up your mess.

AAARRRGGGG! I don't think the store owner is wrong at all, more power to him.

    • Nah, can't charge the people directly for damage they cause, just absorb the cost, distribute it across the prices that EVERYBODY has to pay for the merchandise. Once again, the decent people paying for the habits of the slovenly.

  • I'm game, but if you don't mind I'll pay my IHTM browsing fee monthly... expect my check drawn on the Cypriot Fidelity National Bank in the mail soon.

  • The story is somewhat incomplete. I'm still not sure exactly how they'd implement this, but the point is that you get your 5 bucks back if you buy something. Not sure if that was clear from the Blaze story, I saw it somewhere else last night.

  • It sort of reminds me of the Commiecrats ACA boondoggle, only in that case you have to pay to see what's in it.

  • You'd have to take down the Safelink thread if you start charging for browsing. Five bucks should cover what they would have spent on their free phone so they'd be even.

Edit: On second thought, I should charge five dollars for each TD. I could easily make a comfortable income from that so I wouldn't need foodstamps; everyone wins.

    • Of course, you could do the same thing by getting a JOB. Then you could make a comfortable living, wouldn't need food stamps, and you could even pay your parents back for being such a leech. I still think your food stamps are obtained fraudulently.
PS. Just try collecting for those thumbs down!

    • crowley, if you were just able to be a productive member of society with a job for income, you would'nt have an EBT card. If that happened, screw us, YOU WOULD WIN. But you you are not & you won't.

    • The TDs are not yours to sell. Of course the recipient class by nature always takes what isn't theirs.

    • Congratulations, John. This may have been your first comment that actually required some thought. I would have bet $5 that you'd site this as an example of corporate greed.

    • Sure. But the refund will take about 30 days and by the time you get it it will only have $4.85 purchasing power left.
