BMW CEO says governments need to offer more tax subsidies for EVs. Yeah, dude, like what’s the point of being a crony capitalist rent-seeker if there are no subsidies?

Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

  • I will concede that he is right - especially in Europe - that EVs surely do need and deserve tax breaks -- exactly as much as any other product on the market.

  • I can't remember for sure, but how large were the government subsidies for the first cars in early 1900's or the Wright Flyer or the Edison light bulb or the Bell telephone of the Google search engine. Government couldn't find its collective ass with two hands and a flashlight let alone pick winners in the marketplace.

    • The "Losers" (Kudos danybhoy) like this BMW CEO who suggest we need more government subsidies are not true Capitalists. Capitalists use their own capital or they sell their ideas or business plans to private investors and thereby take huge risks (as in risk/reward) with their own money or with money from people who also want to ride the risk/reward wagon. That's capitalism. Corporate greed is not as pervasive as suggested all the time in the media and by liberal members of congress. But there are greedy CEO's who look to government to subsidize their ideas and they are the ones that have ceased being Capitalists and have become government tit-sucking welfare bastards! But even some of these bastards have perhaps honestly morphed into this condition because they have been shoved into a corner by government regulation such that they have no other recourse but to beg for access to government subsidies in exchange for compliance with government regs (extortion!), which in turn forces the tax payer to make involuntary investments into untested and ill-conceived ideas that no wise private capitalist would dare invest his/her wealth. SOLYNDRA!! So, what appears as corporate greed is really greed from the elitist ruling class... i.e., elected officials who often have no real Capitalist instincts at all, but just GREED to hold on to power.

      6. The unions that back Obama are losers as well. Killing the markets that would pay your memebers by backing Obama is losing plan. Unless you a public sector union memeber, you are an idiot to back Obama.

      7. America will lose everything if we follow all the losers who are leading the way to "collective salvation"

      • You know, I have tried to "splain" it to pecker-head John myself, but he is hooked on the corporate greed thing and has nothing else, no matter who tries to explain it to him, it just bounces off his noggin like a dodge ball. We would get further talking to a lump of dog-poo. He is an OWS shrill plain and simple..so in a way we are talking to poo.

    • I'm a lifelong cheesehead, though I've never been in Wisconsin. I saw the yellow helmet with a G on it when I was a child and decided they were my team.

      As for the topic of this thread, the time is rapidly approaching and really already here where government subsidies are just going to have to end. Governments are broke.

      • I'm a little excited to see what happens this fall in Mr. Rodger's neighborhood! Unfortunately for me, the NFL has changed the black out rule to allow the Tampa Bay Buccaneers games to be televised locally if 85% of the tickets are sold by 72 hours before game time. How this affects me is this; when the local game is blacked out they broadcast other franchise games in their stead, pissing off the locals. It makes sense, what they did. However, since I've been living in the concrete covered swampland of western Florida, my spectating capacity had been limited, reduced to a rare opportunity to watch my beloved Pack. Last year tho, the Bucs couldn't hardly sell out, so only two of the local games were broadcast. I got to see a bunch of Packer games on the tube in place of the 5 other blacked out games. I wouldn't pay the ridiculous fee even if I had a boatload of cash for the NFL TV package.
