Catalytic converter thefts on the rise in NJ. Thieves crawl under vehicles with high ground clearance, like SUVs, and remove the converters in broad daylight with battery-powered saws. Platinum goes for $1500 an ounce these days – it’s a lot easier to steal a buck this way than with copper wire.

This has been a problem in Kalifornia for a long time, and, you'll love this, the MAJORITY of suspects caught are ILLEGAL ALIENS who steal the dam things and sell them to scrapyards. Yea lets bring in 11 million more.
Here in Little Mexico they steal copper from air conditioners. That's a hanging offens in a place where the temp frequently exceeds 100 degrees!

I remember something like this going on in New York in the 90's only it was with airbags. The guy made millions selling airbags to body shops all over the country and every one of them was ripped off.
