At least she paid her taxes: Charlie Rangel disrupts court to support drug gang gunrunner

You really can’t really blame Charlie Rangel. Based on his experience you can blatantly break the law and get a slap on the wrist. So he can’t be expected to know that ordinary citizens actually get punished for their crimes.

Charlie Rangel sees a dangerous precedent here: If you punish ordinary citizens like Afrika Owes for their crimes, it won't be long before you begin punishing Congressmen for theirs

The New York Post has the story:

Members of the Abyssinian Baptist Church packed a Manhattan courtroom yesterday, hoping to post $50,000 in church money to bail out an accused prep-schooler-turned-gun-moll — even though the renowned congregation had been the biggest crusaders against her drug ring.

But as Afrika Owes sobbed from the defense table, a Manhattan judge refused to set her free despite her contingent of church members, family and supporters — including embattled Rep. Charles Rangel.

The congressman had been so eager to weigh in in favor of the bond, he was told three times by court officers to sit back down in his front-row seat.

Not so fast, said Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Edward McLaughlin. There is no case law supporting the use of tax-exempt church funds for bail, he noted, and the parishioners who contributed these funds presumably had no idea they would be used to free an accused drug-gang conspirator.

Owes reportedly was caught on recorded phone calls agreeing to ferry guns for her accused drug-kingpin boyfriend.

“The witness against the defendant is the defendant — the defendant’s own words,” the judge noted.

We’d suggest they break out the old “She didn’t say what she said when she said it” defense. Or maybe the “Who you gonna believe – me or your lyin’ ears” defense. Either one should prove adequate to win the freedom of this poor victim of racism.

  • Why are members of the black community so self loathing that they continue to spend their money and energy trying to defend obviously guilty criminals just because they are also black. Just another OJ or Michael Jackson.

    • Because these "members of the black community" feed on hate, it is their sole reason for living. Without this hate the Jessie Jacksons, Al Sharptons or Charlie Rangles in this world would have no reason to live, they would mean nothing to anyone.

It's these kind of people who are the true "race baiters." They have to fuel the fires of racisism, instead of helping all Americans of all races come together, to justify their existense and line their pockets.

    • I dont know why CERTAIN members of the black community continue to do this. The only thing I can think of is that she is a woman and she probably have children and they may think that she is a victim who was control by her kingpin boyfriend. At least they aren't defending the boyfriend nor are they okay with the enterprise that he leads. However even though she may have been used by him because she is a moron who fell in love with the wrong guy, she is still a criminal and she needs to pay for the decisions she made for her life.

      • Yep. there are some things that are just plain indefensible, because defending them make you look like a damned fool, and often accomplish the exact opposite effect that you were going for.

What does the church think that says of them that they defend her actions, and what do they think it will do to the very problem they are fighting?

It may be tough for them to not get involved, but in this case, they probably should have told her that they will pray for her, but sometimes you gotta "render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's".

Having such low expectations for young black people is every bit as racist as thinking that *all* young black people are like that. I expect no better from Charlie, but I'd expect more out of a church.

  • Hmm, I wonder whether Charlie offered to "hold on to" that 50G's as a favour to the church. Just in case.

  • HOT DAMN finally Charlie got his and the judge actually understood the constitution. She is just another person who got caught doing something illegal and is now looking to use the church to get out of having to pay for her actions. Maybe the preacher should remind her of the thief on the cross and what he was told by the other one.

Charlie take notice that your position in congress had no weight or bearing with this judge. Now if the members of congress would just do the same and send his tax cheating ass packing and force him to pay for his illegal actions, one can dream I guess.

  • The real problem is that ATF does not want any competition in supplying guns to drug runners.

    • You and I are in the same wavelenght that is EXACTLY what I was thinking of when I read that. It is hilarious on so many levels of hilarity.
