Conclusions that can be drawn from this video clip: (1) Chris Matthews is a racist. (2) Chris Matthews is a lunatic. (3) Both of the above.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews has become increasingly erratic since the November elections. That traumatic event seems to have picked him up and tossed him across that fine line that sometimes separates sanity from insanity.

Witness this interview with Michael Steele, the outgoing head of the Republican National Committee.

Matthews: Michael, I watch politics. I’m not an expert on sociology or anything but I’m an expert on watching politics. Like Gene, this what we do. I go to Republican conventions, I go to Democratic and as a white guy one thing I notice about the difference, one thing I notice about black people at different conventions. You go to Democratic a convention with Donna [Edwards] and black folk are hanging together and having a good time. They’re smiling, they’re enjoying themselves. They feel very much at home. You go to a Republican even you get a feeling that you are told, “Individually now, don’t bunch up. Don’t, don’t, don’t get together. Don’t get together, don’t crowd, you’ll scare these people.” Is that true in the Republican Party? Is that still true in your party? Did you fear that if you got together with some other African-Americans white guys might get scared of you?

Steele: (shocked) No! What are you talking about?

So the way we understand Matthews’ bizarre comment, blacks huddle together with other blacks at Democrat conventions, but blend right in at Republican conventions. And in Matthews’ mind, that leads to the obvious conclusion that Republicans are racists.

It’s that kind of insightful analysis that has earned Matthews dozens, maybe even scores of viewers.

    Genius.

    I congratulate you. Well put.

The real sense that no racism is going on is when people "blend" in... for a lack of a better word. Where race (and whatever other issues may be) are not an issue to begin with.

If that is truly what is happening at the REPUBLICAN conventions where people bunch up and have a good time becuase they, you know... like one another, instead of what their skin color looks like, then good... that is awesome.

People usually bunch up together for protection and not to feel isolated. The reason why certain people only stick to their own party group in a party instead of spreading around meeting everyone else.
So... I can assume that if black people at Democratic conventions are bunching up is the reason maybe, because there are trying to protect themselves and not feel isolated at the (perhaps) palpable racism that no one (it seems) wants to discuss, within the Democratic party ...

Yes Chris I can play this game too. He is an idiot.

  • This guy soooo needs an intervention and immediate confinement to a mental hospital. A neurological exam would not be inappropriate either-his synapses are not working. Maybe he is showing the beginnings of Alzheimer's, since he cannot string to gether a comprehensible statement. In my experience, in large groups blacks (and other racial/ethnic groups) have a tendency to hang to gether. That they don't at Republican conventions indicates a feeling of belonging so strong, that they do not feel the need to hang with a small minority, but feel a full membership in the larger group. What do we have to do to get Matthews cancelled?

  • Wow, what a stupid question (actually it wasn't a question, it was an accusatory statement disguised as a question).

Maybe blacks self-segregate at Democrat conventions because they realize they're taken for granted and their opinions are not sought or taken seriously.

Matthews is a silly, inconsequential man babbling idiotically on a station that no one watches.

Too bad Michael Steele didn't slap Chris upside the head.

  • I vote for all of the above. The question begs to be asked is msnbc going to send Christopher out for some sensitivty and ethnic training? Matthews has lost it and this just is the final proof of it.

  • p.s. the reason all the black people are crowding together at the democrat convention is that none of them know anyone or anything about whats going on. All they know is that someone paid everyone in their neighborhood to get on a bus and ride down there.

  • Leading question, meet Chris. Chris, meet Leading Question.

Oh, you're already acquainted? Great! Its your turn to drink and play twister.

Chris, you spun right-hand-blue-crotch-ass. Now how funny is that?!

  • I guess Matthews never thought that maybe people don't feel the need to segregate themselves at conservative events.
