There was a brief moment last week when it appeared that Chris Matthews had regained a bit of his sanity. Never mind. The moment passed.
On Monday night the tremors and hallucinations returned and he told his audience that Fair Game, the new movie about the Valerie Plame scandal, stacks up favorably against Casablanca.
Matthews: Let me finish tonight with a stirring movie I saw last night. I had heard of the first-rate script, the masterful performances by the leads, Naomi Watts and Sean Penn. What I was not prepared for in Fair Game was the story itself, the wondrous dramatic courage of it all. This is one fine movie. While there will never be another Casablanca, Fair Game is perfect for our murky time.
On this review, we give Chris two thumbs down. And one finger up.

You have spunk and have served in the forces and I admire both, so I'll try to be more tolerant of your comments, because I too am tired of what I see as our country losing it's direction.

J.Wilson did not attempt to argue that Saddam was not interested in Nigerian uranium. I'm not sure he addressed that at all. He investigated the SALE of uranium on the Bush Administration's behalf, and determined there was no evidence for it

At any point of time -in this country- we are no more than 24 months outside of voting for all of the House of Representatives and at least one third of the Senate. July 2003 would have been roughly 16 months away from not only a Congressional election but a Presidential one as well. It could very well be that was the election Wilson was seeking to manipulate.
For more information of the matter might I suggest the Constitution. Specifically Article 1 Sections 2 and 3 and Article 2 Section 1. A reading of some of the Amendments might also be useful for a further understanding on not only the election process but also terms of service and the like. Please also see Amendments 12, 17, 20 and 25. There are some other Amendments detailing matters of franchise. But I think I've left enough here to get you started on your journey towards becoming an individual literate in some of the basics of our system.

Writing for NYT op/ed in order to influence an election 16 months away is the ultimate hail mary, if in fact that was the intent. More strategically sound, assuming the agenda you so readily speculate over, would be for him to press his attack on GWB and the imminent invasion of Iraq BEFORE the 2002 elections and war resolution votes.
It is much more likely that @Jay Kanter's statement, "It was election time coming up", is simply misinformed, or misplaced in a vaguely remembered timeline, despite your misguided and patronizing defense

But according to Joe Wilson nobody in the third world was ever trying to get nuclear weapons. Maybe Valerie Plame did us all a favor by outing herself. After all why should we have to pay her to waste all that time and resources on a phantom that does not exist.
You are willing to seriously oversimplify Joe Wilson's position on the matter, in order to justify the compromise of U.S. intelligence operations? To what end? Are you in opposition to the CIA? (this is not terribly uncommon in some circles)
Or do you actually believe that Joe Wilson stated that "nobody in the third world was ever trying to get nuclear weapons?" Does ANYBODY actually take that position? Are you a straw man fighter by choice?
Joe Wilson very specifically addressed the lack of evidence for uranium deals between Nigeria and Saddam Hussein's Iraq, not the entire 3rd world. I'm certain he was well aware of, say, Dr. Khan's travels in Libya, N.Korea and Iran (as should you be, and one would like to think the CIA and other agencies remain uncompromised in their investigations of similar activities)
BTW i have not seen this movie yet. I have too many kids to go out and see anything that isn't animated
My oversimplification of Joe Wilson’s role in the matter is likely a kindness to him. He was a hack with a political agenda. He went to Nigeria with a specific purpose in mind. His purpose was to indicate that the Bush administration had known from the beginning that there were no WMD’s in Iraq. Specifically when he -Bush- made the statement “, "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa." That statement became the one of the lefts’ many “Remember the Alamo” moments of the oughts. There were others. You are no doubt familiar with the Downing Street Memo affair.
I know there was 500 tons of yellowcake, of a purity far less than weapons grade, discovered in the country. I know it ended up in Canada. How Hussein got his hands on it is beyond me. But I do know that the WMD controversy, and regardless of if they ever existed or if they were spirited away to Syria, made any claim of any third world nations trying to develop nuclear weapons a very spurious affair. And Joe Wilson played no small part in advancing that meme into the popular conscience.
As for the CIA I have no specific conclusions regarding them. I don’t know enough. I will never be read in. All I have concerning them are rumours and speculations. Certainly I am glad there are men and women about that can do what they do. But I don’t think I’ve acquired the level of pragmatism necessary to want to be more fully aware of what it is they do.
It does seem, however, that if they sanctioned the Wilson’s and indulged them in their fact finding fantasy and then allowed for “information” to be disseminated for public consumption and that “information” was highly unflattering to the administration then they had an agenda. And that agenda was not serving at the President’s pleasure. Perhaps this is not their function. But that doesn’t mean their function should be shaping public opinion.
Of course if you are looking for somebody to blame for the “outing” of Valerie Plame then maybe you should blame her. If she hadn’t decided to politicize the issues then nobody would ever have heard of her. If she was a pencil pusher at the time then what is the harm of her former exploits being exposed -especially if she was so willing to exploit them herself for political gains. And if she truly was undercover why then did she take actions that brought scrutiny to her and her husband and why did she out herself instead of maintaining the cover that she was a pencil pusher? These actions might make for great improvements in the social lives and bank accounts of Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame . . . but they most certainly do not serve to preserve the viability of these “U.S. intelligence operations” that you are so protective of.

Saw this movie Saturday night. It is shamelessly hagiographic. I am surprised the Valerie Plame action figure and video games are not on the market yet.

An endorsement from him tells me that this is the movie that I need to skip this fall. I don't particularly care for Sean Penn anyway.
If Chris ever had a sense of integrity, it sure left him. He's a joke and doesn't deserve to have a voice in the media. I'll not tune in anymore even out of curiosity. I think he might be senile.
What is most intriguing is trying to find a legitimate reason why a corporation, GE in this instance, would continue to sully their image with hapless morons like mathews and olbermann. when somebody really connects the dots there are going to be a lot of angry shareholders. I unloaded them years ago.

They'll do anything to swipe a buck or bag a subsidy. GE is corporate welfare scum to the core. They're in so deep in lib politics that the only way out is to double down on manipulating our elections.
