Step One: Put climate station in paved parking lot in desert. Step Two: Issue dire global warming alert

One might think that a group of highly-educated meteorologists would anticipate that putting a climate station in the middle of a paved parking lot in the middle of a desert might provide temperature data that skews slightly high. Not so.

Middle of paved parking lot, middle of desert: The official climate station at the University of Arizona

The geniuses at the Department of Atmospheric Science at the esteemed University of Arizona did exactly that. And then they issued the following dire global warming alert:

Rising sea levels could threaten an average of 9 percent of the land within 180 U.S. coastal cities by 2100, according to new research led by University of Arizona scientists.

The Gulf and southern Atlantic coasts will be particularly hard hit. Miami, New Orleans, Tampa, Fla., and Virginia Beach, Va. could lose more than 10 percent of their land area by 2100.

The research is the first analysis of vulnerability to sea-level rise that includes every U.S. coastal city in the lower 48 with a population of 50,000 or more.

Using similar research methods to work, we put a thermometer in the refrigerator at ITHM HQ and we were shocked to discover that it shows temperatures are plummeting and that a new Ice Age is upon us.

Ain’t science grand?

    • Andy, if you look closely at the map at the top of that page, not only will you see that the stations are mostly wildly inaccurate, but the biggest areas of non-coverage are some of the hottest parts of the country. Interesting.

  • Education funding must be cut drastically, not only do they waste the billions of dollars they're given, they influence public policy causing further billions to be wasted.

  • This is only one of many sites that are truly horrendous. Anthony Watts and his volunteer network did a great job in surveying more than 80% of the climate measuring sites in the U.S. and found that 90% of the sites failed to meet the government standards for accuracy of plus or minus 1 degrees C. Some of the pictures they collected are incredible to be considered as climate monitoring sites. The 90% of poor stations have corrupted the integrity of temperature history records. Those interested in the extensive report can check it out here: http://surfacestations.org/

  • Obviously the people running this test aren't native Arizonans . I could tell you it gets hot in the summer... Heck, when I was in HS we had summers where the temps reached 122 degrees regularly. And that was in the early 90s....

I can't imagine Arizona Natives had anything to do with this. They probably just laughed in their faces, then went in side and turned up the AC.

  • The engineering schools at the UC I went to put out more environmental engineers than chemical, electrical, electronic, mechanical, and nuclear engineers combined.

Call me rooted in reality but that is not how a country becomes prosperous.

    • "Environmental Studies" should be part of the liberal arts program. To call it science and engineering is insulting scientists and engineers.

    • What exactly does an "environmental engineer" do besides apply for government grants to study global warming?

  • The same knuckleheads built climate measuring platforms all over Kern County, California in the same manner and came up with the same predetermined results...AGW. All hyped and ballyhooed as the end of the world as we know it unless we do something, anything, now! This was all commie University of California, Bakersfield's game plan as early as 1982. This commie crap has been going on since I was a kid living in McFarland in the late 50's. We should have shipped these libtard pathelogical liars off to Siberia then when gas was cheaper...28 cents a gallon. Ahh, for the good old days!

  • I continue to insist that the whole idea of measuring the planet's temperature is absurd, but nobody will listen: http://jpattitude.com/100222.php

It's a classic "emperor has no clothes" situation, where even global warming skeptics get sucked into arguing about Earth's "temperature" as though it's a viable scientific concept.

    • People, people, people!

Go to that guy's link! Brilliant!

My favorite bit: If somebody came to you and said, “I have counted the number of refrigerators and doors and dead flies and grains of salt in your house and the average number of things in your house is five thousand three hundred and twelve,” and then tried to convince you this was the best estimate for the number of beds in your home, you’d assume he was crazy. But that’s exactly what the IPCC promoters of AGW have been doing for three decades.

    • "Pretend that your name is Isaac Galileo “Buster” Einstein ..."

      LOL! Pretend?

Say, did you happen to get "Buster" from the Mythbusters? He's my favorite host. So resilient. Just how I like my men. The strong, silent type.

  • Remember Piltdown man? A lot of egg on a lot of faces, many posthumously, unfortunately.

Anthropogenic Climate Change? International joke, and will be written up as such, eventually. Too late, no doubt, for the perpetrators to observe life through a barred aspect, or hang by their greedy lying necks until dead, so help us, God...

  • Talk about "cooking" the test results. Global warming is nothing more than a ponzi scheme to make Albert Gore and his buddies a bunch of money, pure and simple.
