When it's a religion of feelings and emotions over one of wisdom and reason you get people saying the most preposterous things because to say otherwise might cause them to dig deeper into the reasons they think the way they do. Nobody who possesses a weak mental constitution wants to learn that they're not as smart that they think they are and they definitely don't want to be told that what they believe they know is false. That's just human nature.
