We realize that everyone is busy, and zips in and out of way too many websites a day, and so we can’t take for granted that you’ve really noticed all the features IHateTheMedia.com has to offer. So, we’d like to take a moment this Saturday to make brief mentions of them, as you might very well find something useful here you hadn’t noticed before.
Favorites: We have published over 1,100 articles since we began in late January of this year. There’s a lot to read, but who’s got the time to page through all the articles? While we think everything we publish is fantastic, we do mark some as “favorites” that we think of as just way to good to miss. The titles of the most recent favorites runs down the left-hand column. But you can click on the Favorites tab at the top of the center column for a complete list.
Random: One of our most interesting features is the Random tab, also at the top of the center column. Click this and a random article will be displayed. Click it again for another. And another. Warning: its addicting and you could be there clicking for hours.
Index: Another of the tabs is “Index,” which brings you to a list of the last 100 article titles, a list of popular tags assigned to articles, and archives of articles by month. Clicking a tag will show you the titles of all articles with that tag. Very handy.
Grapevine: We absolutely love this page, but quite frankly, we are a bit confused as to why not many people actually use it. Clicking into Grapevine will let you see the most recent article titles and excerpts from many other media-related sites and blogs. It’s a great way to keep up from one place. Please try it and and offer us some feedback.
Next/Previous: When you are on single page article, you can use the Next and Previous tabs at the top, or links below the article to move forward and backward through our articles.
Subscribe to Feed: As with just about every news-related site, ours offers a newsfeed. If you use a feed reader, just go and click the Feed link in our Meta section in the right-hand column and add our feed to your daily dose of stories. If you don’t use a feed reader, you owe it to yourself to try one. Our favorite is Google Reader.
Subscribe by email: You can also get our feed via email. In plainspeak, we’ll send you a recap of our stories every day. This way, you don’t miss a thing. Anyone can do this, no need to be a techie. Just click on the link, also in Meta, and pop in your email address. Seriously, if you like our site, you should at least do this.
Register: Why register an accoun if you can read all the articles and you can post comments without one (for now, at least). The benefit is that for those who do post comments, you will 1) reserve your login name, and 2) not have to enter your name and email address each time you comment. And in the future there will be some features available only to registered users.
Subscribe to Comments: After you make a comment on an article (and please do, don’t be shy!), check the “Notify me of followup comments via e-mail” box. We will then notify you when anyone else posts a subsequent comment to that article.
Search: Top right, self-explanatory.
Twitter: We know, Twitter, Twitter, Twitter, it’s overblown right? We don’t think so. It’s extremely valuable used when used properly (and a waste of time when it’s not). And one thing you should know, as conservatives, is that it’s one of the few places on the web that is filled with conservatives, and the anti-free speech liberals are not in control of it as in just about every other social networking site. Just to make new conservative friends is reason enough to use Twitter.
But why should you follow us on Twitter? Isn’t it just the same content as we publish? No. Isn’t it just conversation? No. While we do make a tweet (message) for every post we do, we also post links to other stories from other sites that we find interesting. And we Retweet (help pass around) the best links from our Twitter friends. We shy away from cluttering things up with “conversation.” If you don’t have a Twitter account, know that it takes seconds to create, and you will not be annoyed by any emails (set them off in your Settings), and nothing happens unless you decide to get on and read your friends’ tweets.
So, if you are new to this, simply go to Twitter.com, register an account, and then go to Twitter.com/ihatethemedia and click the “Follow” button. Then, each time you go on to Twitter, you’ll see our tweets. Simple as that. There’s more, but that’s a start.
Free link: Click the “Free Link” at the top navigation bar for information. In a nutshell, we so appreciate any references to our site and articles from your our blog, that whenever we get a visitor from your site, we will place a link to your site in the “Thanks for the Link” section in the left column.
Hate Mail: Read the seething anger from the left.
Please give some of these features a try and let us now what you think.
