Ahhh, the sheer genius of green technology. In the grand tradition of British windmills that won’t work when the weather is cold and power is needed most, it’s now been discovered that green volcano monitoring devices won’t work when their solar panels are covered with volcanic ash.
The Jakarta Post has the erupting story:
The South Lampung Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) lacked vital information in deciding to evacuate tens of thousands in danger zones near Mount Anak Krakatau, says this article in the Jakarta Post.
“We have taken anticipatory measures because ash continues to flow, while the seismograph used to monitor Mount Anak Krakatau could not provide data on its activities,” said South Lampung BPBD head Abdul Shomad on Monday.
“The observation posts in Hargopancuran, Rajabasa, South Lampung, and Pasauran, Banten, have not yet been able to monitor volcanic activities because equipment installed around the volcano is still out of order.”
“Observation from the naked eye shows volcanic ash and smoke, spewing from Mount Anak Krakatau at around 600 meters high,” said Hargopancuran observation station head Andi Suhardi. “(However), we cannot monitor seismic activities because the seismometers are not working after their solar panels were covered with volcanic ash.”
“Suhardi said his office had learned about the faulty monitoring devices installed on the slopes of Mt. Anak Krakatau on Dec. 27, thus failing to monitor volcanic activities from 6:30 p.m. until noon on Dec. 28, despite the fact that the volcano, located in the middle of the sea, was actively emitting volcanic materials.
Translation: “We don’t quite have all the wrinkles worked out of this green technology yet.”

- don't you know, ... now is the time they bring out their 'new & improved' model - it's only gonna cost the gov. (etc.), another $xx million - or so, - plus a 'ramped-up' R&R (remove and replace) service contract - etc. Then, when that one doesn't work either, they bring out 'new & improved' model' #2, - then model #3, etc. It's an old story, - ask any defense contractor.
See, I told ya we need to do something about that volcano. Global warming will not get to happen if that Son of Krakato pops. That pop will be heard around the world, just like way back then.
Speaking of United Nations does anyone know where the money for Haiti releaf when too? 15-21 billion of our money went to the U.N. and it is gone. Heck, with one billion I could build a city for those poor people.
It is a lead pipe cinch that any money channeled through the UN never makes it to where it is intended, unless you intended for it to be a bribe/payout to a corruptocrat.

How could anyone foresee a volcano spewing a million or so cubic yards of ash that would cover solar panels? How do you suppose a bunch PhD-having seismologists be expected to foresee the eruption of a volcano? that is impossible-we all know that. They put that solar array there to power the monitors that check for seismological events like the earthquakes that precede volcanic eruptions........so they would only know what would happen if the volcano had erupted for oh, say the last 100 or so years(since they started monitoring the volcano, and even then, the batteries may go out from time to time, so they wouldn't know, unless they visited the volcano with students on a regular basis......what's that, they have had the volcano monitored for 60 or so years? What's that, they know it erupts on a regular basis by looking at all the black dust and rock that is fresh and steaming and has been for decades? what's that, PhD means they have studied seismology for 20 or so years and have been to dozens of other volcanoes on a regular basis and knew damn well that the panels would be covered with ash? Never mind.

Actually, pretty freaking easy, Chester. Volcanic ash is a real b*tch to deal with. It goes everywhere, and it covers everything, and it's OPAQUE. Even on a moderate eruption, ash clouds will block out the sun. If you want to monitor volcanoes, then well-known hazards should be part of your design. Any idiot that reads about volcanoes would know about this -- so I would guess that vulcanologists ought to have more knowledge, not less.
Just like with any disaster recovery or resilient hardware situation, you plan for the events that have the greatest probability. Anything less is rank incompetence. You can't even tell me that there is no other way of powering or operating these devices.

You know, when I first read that headline, I only parsed 'Solar powered volcano', and I was wondering WTF them hippies are up to now -- isn't Obama a big enough disaster already that they have to build solar powered volcanoes?
In case you're wondering about my sanity, I had a burrito powered volcano once, and those are pretty dangerous all by themselves, so a solar powered one wouldn't be all that much of a stretch for your average hairy-pitted lib.
...and then I had another beer and things stopped being so blurry and out-of-focus.

"Anak Krakatau" translates as "Son of Krakatau". I wonder if the son is going to imitate dad and blow his top in a spectacular eruption. I bet the citizens of Indonesia would like to have advance warning of an imminent detonation.

Especially if you lived in the northeast part of our country about now. I would love to see some "scientist" go to Boston and try to tell the people there that globull warming is going to kill everything on the planet. By the time the cops show up the ass whipping would be over with and everyone would be at home. Sitting by the heater or fireplace trying to stay warm.
The best part of this whole scam is that CO2 has nothing to with what is being claimed. It's solar activity, not CO2, that determines what is going on. CO2 is just used by plants as food, & then through the process of photosynthesis, produces oxygen.

FACTS ABOUT CO2
CO2 is a variable gas--considered a weak GHG--and never will have a stable concentration in the atmosphere, either from place to place, or time of year, or even time of day in any particular area.
What is known is that CO2 is:
1) Not a strong greenhouse gas and that the current concentrations are well within normal levels.
2) Not a so-called "driving force" for warming trends but follows those periods of warming.
3) The one life giving force that enables all life on this planet to exist.
This is only a surprise to:
A) Earth-worshiping pseudo-scientists who checked their brains at the doors of modern academia
B) Agenda-driven, cash-hungry ideologues locked away in research Ivory Towers
C) Politicians who paid for this effort
