Yogi Bear goes solar. Consider it a boo-boo.

Yosemite just spent $4.5 million on a solar installation to save them $50,000 per year.

Due to another government boondoggle Ranger Rick is going to have to tell Yogi his pic-a-nic basket will be empty for decades to come. And we owe it all to the geniuses who run Yosemite National Park.

The problem? Solar energy, something many people and the government think is free or is going to quickly pay for itself.

yogi-bear
Smarter than your average environmentally-conscious National Park Service bureaucrat

Yosemite just spent $4.5 million on a solar installation to save them $50,000 per year. They also claim $700,000 in rebates. $4.5 million minus $700,000 leaves $3.8 million net cost, which divided by $50,000 per year means 76 years to break even, or about a lifetime.

That’s bad enough, but since solar panels only last about 25 years it means they’ll have to replace them about 2 more times over that 76 years, costing another $9+ million. Add that to the original $3.8 million and that’s $12.8 million total costs, which divided over 76 years equals $168,421 per year to save $50,000 per year. That’s a net loss of $118,421 x 76 years, a total loss of about $9 million of your tax dollars so a few people can be touchy-feely. (And we won’t even bother getting into the the accounting farce of one government agency counting a rebate from another government agency.)

With savings like that we can all now see why the United States is broke. As one can plainly see whomever approved this is not smarter than the average bear.

Green jobs withering up and dying in Massachusetts

There is no penalty for failure which explains why government “investments” usually do.

It’s a painful experience, both emotionally and financially, when you lose your job. However, given the chest pounding done by Gov. Deval Patrick (D-MA) and President Obama about the jobs “green energy” would create, we feel compelled to point out – because the MSM won’t – that the business world ain’t no country for old Marxist men.

evergreen-solar
Evergreen Solar soaked up government dollars instead of sunshine

The Boston Herald has the story:

Evergreen Solar Inc., the Marlboro clean-energy company that received millions in state subsidies to build an ill-fated Bay State factory, has filed for bankruptcy.

Evergreen, which closed its taxpayer-supported Devens factory in March and cut 800 jobs, has been trying to rework its debt for months.

The company also said it will lay off another 65 jobs in the United States and Europe, mostly through the shutdown of its Midland, Mich., manufacturing facility. That would leave Evergreen with about 68 workers according to a headcount listed in the bankruptcy filing.

Evergreen secured a $58 million financial aid package from the Patrick administration to help build the $450 million Devens factory. The state has been trying to recoup about $4 million in cash from the company, the once-promising poster child of the governor’s clean-energy economic agenda.

Evergreen makes solar panels – so do lots of Chinese companies that pay their workers lower wages and sell their panels at lower prices. In any commodity business, the low-cost producer always wins.

Evil, stupid private capital understands this, smart public-sector technocrats either don’t or just don’t care. Their attitude about taxpayer money is “there’s plenty more where that came from.”

There is no penalty for failure which explains why government “investments” usually do.

Hilarious: Germany to pay for its new coal power plants by diverting money from climate change fund

Perhaps Germans could figure out a way to power their nation by tapping into the steam coming out of the eco-wackos’ ears.

Angela Merkel’s government has made an announcement that’s sure to make environmental wackos happy – they’re closing down all their nuclear power plants. But Phase Two of the plan will drive the wackos even whackier.

coal-plant-germany
German eco-wackos got their dream and their worst nightmare

Watts Up With That has the details:

Less than a month after the failed Bonn UN climate confab, Germany has announced a most audacious energy policy: in order to shutter nuclear plants (but not completely scuttle their economy), the German government will direct climate fund cash to building coal and natural gas plants. You can’t make this stuff up.

Germany plans to dump nuclear power by 2022 but clearly needs to meet burgeoning electricity demand especially for a still powerful manufacturing economy dependent upon exports. Solar panels at their latitude and windmills are not going to suffice, so the solution is more coal. The environmental movement must be apoplectic with so many politically correct wires crossing at once.

Perhaps Germans could figure out a way to power their nation by tapping into the steam coming out of the eco-wackos’ ears.

A thousand years from now archeologists will uncover these vast fields of silicon panels around the world and wonder what their purpose was.

We, on the other hand, don’t have to wait a thousand years. We’re already wondering what their purpose is.

Environmental civil war: Wind farmers vs. bird lovers

What happens when animal advocates run smack dab into wind farm advocates? Or to state the question a bit more precisely, what happens when birds run smack dab into wind mills. Civil war, that’s what.

In 1861, the American Civil War broke out at Fort Sumter. 150 years later, the Environmental Civil War broke out in Spain.

The Daily Caller has the avian information:

On Tuesday an international bird watchdog group based in Spain, Save the Eagles International (STEI), warned that the expected construction of 3.5 million wind turbines worldwide will result in the extinction of a variety of bird species.

STEI is calling for a moratorium on all wind farm construction and an investigation into whether the threat to wildlife is worth the amount of energy produced — when, they say, there are so many other, more efficient sources of energy.

Which sources would those be? Nuclear’s unacceptable to environmentalists. They want hydro-electric dams destroyed. Coal’s a non-starter. Oil won’t fly.

According to STEI it is a fallacy to compare wind turbine bird deaths to other sources of bird carnage such as automobiles and high windows, as wind turbine construction is optional.

“[M]ortality caused by windfarms and their power lines is new and additional”, said STEI president Mark Duchamp. “[A]nd like the proverbial last drop that spills the glass, its effects will be upsetting. To wit the Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle, which has been condemned to extinction by the construction of seven windfarms in its habitat.”

Nooooooooo! Not the Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle! It’s our favorite of all the wedge-tailed eagles.

Yeah, but … yeah, but … yeah, but the wind is natural

Nuclear fatalities in the last ten years: 7. Wind farm fatalities in the last ten years: 44. In those ten years nuclear provided thirty times the energy of wind.

Anyone who remembers Jane Fonda’s outstanding performance in China Syndrome knows that nuclear power is dangerous.  Very, very dangerous. It’s a damn killer is what it is. In fact, the only thing more dangerous than a dose of radiation is a dose of perspective.

james-delingpole
James Delingpole, an oasis in a desert of political correctnes

British columnist James Delingpole explains what we mean:

Nuclear fatalities in the last ten years: 7
Wind farm fatalities in the last ten years: 44.

In those ten years nuclear provided thirty times the energy of wind. This means in the last decade, nuclear has been around 200 times safer than wind on an energy produced/accidents basis.

Note: Wind farm statistics include neither birds killed by turning blades nor eco-wackos killed by the turn of events.

Ssssh: Massachusetts eco-wackos say hi-tech windmill makes too much noise

A dozen Cape Cod families say a new hi-tech wind turbine in their neighborhood makes too much noise and makes them physically ill, so they’ve hired an attorney to do something about it.

wind-one-falmouth
Wind One in Falmouth, Massachusetts generates more controversy than power

WGBH.com has the story:

Standing on his home’s porch, Neil Anderson points through the thicket of trees in his front yard and across Blacksmith Shop Road towards one of his closest neighbors: A wind turbine.

“Right now we are 1,320 feet, which is one-quarter mile south of Wind One, which is Falmouth’s first wind turbine. It’s been online since April. And we’ve been trying to get it stopped since April,” Anderson says.

Wind One, as the turbine is officially called, is owned by the town of Falmouth and is located at the town’s wastewater treatment plant, where it stands 262 feet tall to the turbine’s hub. That’s about 10 feet taller than the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown. The blades extend just shy of 400 feet, which is about half the height of the John Hancock Building in Boston.

Oddly enough, the guy doing the complaining is a greenie. Anderson owns a passive solar company on Cape Cod.

The energy conservationist in Anderson considered wind power a good principle. He wasn’t alone — before the turbine switched on, Falmouth residents almost universally welcomed Wind One as a symbol of renewable energy and a way to keep taxes down.

“I was proud looking at it from this viewpoint — until it started turning,” Anderson said.

… “It is dangerous. Headaches. Loss of sleep. And the ringing in my ears never goes away. I could look at it all day, and it does not bother me. It’s quite majestic — but it’s way too close,” Anderson said.

The power of wind, apparently, is dwarfed by the power of hypocrisy.

Not too brrrrrrright: Students are freezing in $40,000 solar powered classroom

Eco-campaigners who built a classroom powered by the sun have been taught a valuable lesson – there is not enough sun in North London to sufficiently heat their building.

Just one quick question before we get to the meat of this story: Are you aware of an eco-project – any eco-project anywhere in the world – that actually works and doesn’t require massive government subsidies? This one certainly doesn’t qualify.

solar-powered-classroom
Learning is difficult in this British eco-classroom because the teacher's lectures are drowned out by the chattering of the students' teeth

The Daily Mail UK reports the chilling details:

Eco-campaigners who built a classroom powered by the sun believed they were paving the way for the future.
Instead they have been taught a valuable lesson – there is not enough sun in North London to sufficiently heat their building.
The much feted zero-carbon Living Ark classroom was opened three months ago to great fanfare.

It boasts laudable green credentials and is made from sustainable wood, sheep’s wool and soil. The roof is made of mud and grass and it has its own ‘rain pod’ and solar panels.
But there is snag – its solar panels only provide enough energy to power a few lightbulbs.
As a result the classroom is bitterly cold and uninhabitable for lessons.

Parents have branded it ‘useless’, an ‘expensive piece of wood’ and a ‘great idea for the Caribbean’.

The Living Ark was built at Muswell Hill Primary School, North London, at the cost of £25,000.

If we could merely harness the hot air expelled by Al Gore and his band of global warming acolytes, the classroom would be so damn hot that the little British tykes would have to strip down to their skivvies. Which would, of course, present a whole different set of problems.

Eco Fail: Solar-powered volcano monitoring devices fail when covered with volcanic ash

Ahhh, the sheer genius of green technology. In the grand tradition of British windmills that won’t work when the weather is cold and power is needed most, it’s now been discovered that green volcano monitoring devices won’t work when their solar panels are covered with volcanic ash.

Krakatau: Where there's smoke, there's an inoperable green monitoring device

The Jakarta Post has the erupting story:

The South Lampung Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) lacked vital information in deciding to evacuate tens of thousands in danger zones near Mount Anak Krakatau, says this article in the Jakarta Post.

“We have taken anticipatory measures because ash continues to flow, while the seismograph used to monitor Mount Anak Krakatau could not provide data on its activities,” said South Lampung BPBD head Abdul Shomad on Monday.

“The observation posts in Hargopancuran, Rajabasa, South Lampung, and Pasauran, Banten, have not yet been able to monitor volcanic activities because equipment installed around the volcano is still out of order.”

“Observation from the naked eye shows volcanic ash and smoke, spewing from Mount Anak Krakatau at around 600 meters high,” said Hargopancuran observation station head Andi Suhardi. “(However), we cannot monitor seismic activities because the seismometers are not working after their solar panels were covered with volcanic ash.”

“Suhardi said his office had learned about the faulty monitoring devices installed on the slopes of Mt. Anak Krakatau on Dec. 27, thus failing to monitor volcanic activities from 6:30 p.m. until noon on Dec. 28, despite the fact that the volcano, located in the middle of the sea, was actively emitting volcanic materials.

Eco-wackos on parade: Now they’re suing to stop a solar plant

But … but … but how can this be? We thought solar was the fuel of the future, the salvation of mankind, the inexhaustible green gift that keeps on giving.

But … but … but how can this be? We thought solar was the fuel of the future, the salvation of mankind, the inexhaustible green gift that keeps on giving.

Reuters has the tale of the confused conservationists:

desert-solar
Yes, it's confusing, but the eco-extremists won't even approve sources of power they approve of

A U.S. conversation (sic) group has sued the federal government over its approval of a major solar power plant in the California desert, the latest in a string of challenges to the nation’s renewable energy goals from the environmental community.

According to court papers, the non-profit Western Watersheds Project alleged U.S. regulators approved Brightsource Energy’s 370-megawatt Ivanpah solar energy plant without conducting adequate environmental reviews, and asked the court to order the defendants to withdraw their approvals.

Let’s see now. We can’t use coal because it’s dirty. We can’t use hydroelectric because it destroys natural waterways. We can’t use oil because it causes global warming. We can’t use wind because it kills birds and bats and destroys the view from the Kennedy’s Hyannisport estate. And now we can’t use solar because … well … we’re not quite sure why we can’t use solar.

Luckily, we saw this coming at IHateTheMedia.com and took steps to solve the problem of increasingly restricted fuel supplies. Our entire operation is powered with the high grade Japanese whale oil. Smells like hell, but it puts out a lovely warm glow that both heats and lights.

Britain discovers that the cost of sustainable energy is, in a word, unsustainable

The failure of Britain’s wind farms to produce electricity in the extreme cold will cost billions of pounds, create an economic crisis and lead to blackouts, leading industrialists have warned.

Have you ever noticed that the rude intrusion of reality into the sustainable energy debate always hits eco-wackos hardest?

british-wind-farm-snow
Cold weather makes British wind farms freeze up like an old maid on a honeymoon

The Daily Mail UK reports on the unexpected consequences of the colder than normal British winter:

The failure of Britain’s wind farms to produce electricity in the extreme cold will cost billions of pounds, create an economic crisis and lead to blackouts, leading industrialists have warned.

To cover up the ineffectiveness of wind farms the Government will be forced to build emergency back-up power plants, the cost of which will be paid by industry and consumers.

… Industry regulator Ofgem has already calculated that the cost of achieving sustainable energy targets – set by Brussels but backed by the British Government – will amount to £200 billion, which will mean that annual household fuel bills will double to about £2,400 on average within the next ten years.

In the last quarter ending December 23, wind turbines produced on average 8.6 per cent of our electricity, but the moment the latest bad weather arrived with snow and freezing temperatures, this figure fell to as low as 1.8 per cent.

The slack was immediately taken up by efficient, but dirty, coal-fired power stations and oil-fired plants.

And we’ll bet a couple pounds that the British eco-wackos had their furnaces turned up just as high as anyone else.

Electric car sales in Spain skyrocket by 1500% in one year

Spain’s government-backed REVE electric car and wind power project said 15 cars had been sold so far this year, in addition to one last year.

electric car spain
Its power source is electric, but its sales are anemic

There was an old Cold War joke about a two-man footrace staged between John Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev. JFK won the race handily and the next day Soviet newspapers reported, “Khrushchev defeated all but one competitor in the big race, Kennedy finishes next to last.”

Consider that the inspiration for the headline on this story about sales of electric cars in Spain. The BBC reports that:

Spain’s plans to have 2,000 electric cars on the road by the end of 2010 have been dealt a blow as figures showed just 16 have been sold.

The government-backed REVE electric car and wind power project said 15 cars had been sold so far this year, in addition to one last year.

They’ve sold 16 electric cars in the whole country in two years. At this rate, Spain’s electric car owners club could hold its annual convention one good-sized, gas-guzzling SUV.

If electric car sales are this anemic in an enlightened European country like Spain, what are the odds that a big car lovin’ country like the United States will be able to meet President Obama’s goal of having 1,000,000 plug-in hybrids on the road by 2015?

He’s completely outta gas on this one.

Investors Business Daily again demonstrates the logic that the biased liberal media won’t.

“…It was thought that Chukchi’s waters northwest of Alaska’s landmass held 30 billion cubic feet of natural gas.”

“Today, Science magazine reports that the U.S. Geological Survey now finds it holds more than anyone thought — 1.6 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered gas, or 30% of the world’s supply and 83 billion barrels of undiscovered oil, 4% of the global conventional resources.
That’s enough U.S. energy to achieve self-sufficiency and never worry about it as a national security question again.”

Sneak preview of the first car developed by Obama Motors (formerly General Motors)

(Originally published three weeks ago, we felt today would be an appropriate day to rerun it)

It’s sleek. Powerful. And comes with a remarkably fuel efficient ethanol engine. It’s the 2010 Czar Car from Obama Motors.

obama_motorsDesigned by well-known automotive designer Barack Obama, the Czar Car simultaneously protects the environment and the President’s union constituents.

The Czar Car runs on ethanol and gets a million miles per gallon. Once a decade when your gas tank gets low, just pull into the cornfield in your neighborhood and say, “Fill ‘er up.”

The 2010 Czar Car is currently just a prototype, but you’ll soon see if being driven by members of ACORN as they travel around the country performing census duties and counting people who don’t exist in Democratic districts.

Best of all, the Czar Car comes with a lifetime guarantee supplied by the government of the United States of America.

And since it comes from the same people who brought you the Post Office and the Department of Motor Vehicles, we suggest you keep that warranty handy at all times.

Gwyneth Paltrow red-faced over green criticism?

paltrow_martinActress Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband, rocker Chris Martin, both bleed green. At least publicly. But privately, well, that’s a different matter.

A recent independent audit shows that their London home “leaks” energy. And a lot of it — more than 1,000 kilowatt hours of heat per year. In fact, the Times of London reports that thermal images of Paltrow/Martin and nine other high-profile English eco-wackos found that their homes’ heat loss was no better than what’s found in the average family home and often worse.
