New Eyjafjallajökull disaster: Volcano erupts again, movie stars’ private jets can’t fly into Cannes

There’s a dark cloud hanging over Europe. The South of France to be exact.

Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano has kicked up another cloud of ash that’s spreading across the continent thick as peanut butter on a slab of white bread.

ABC News reports the tragedy:

The Cannes film festival brings its usual mix of obscure movie makers and Hollywood royalty this year, though for all the glamour and fun, financial turmoil will take some of the gloss off the world’s top cinema showcase.

And following a last-minute clean-up operation in the French Riviera resort due to storms last week, organizers will now be fretting over travel disruptions as flights over other parts of Europe have again been grounded by volcanic ash.

It was one thing, damn it, when thousands of airliners were grounded, billions of dollars were lost and ordinary people were inconvenienced. But it’s a completely different thing when privileged, pampered movie stars can’t fly to the Cannes Film Festival.

Sadly, the cloud of ash may force the stars and moguls to arrive by yacht instead of private jets.

This now qualifies as a bigger disaster than Gigli and Ishtar put together.
