What percentage of your co-workers deserved a raise last year?
Factor in that fat guy who pretends to work but really doesn’t, the chick who used every allotted sick day and then couldn’t keep her stories straight and requested bereavement time when her mother died twice last year, the guy who screws up every assignment he’s ever given, the guy who falls asleep in every meeting, the guy who gets drunk at lunch and can’t function in the afternoon, and all the other losers who make your job twice as hard.

Investors Business Daily has the story of the government’s remarkable workers:
Just 737 federal employees were denied a pay increase in 2009 due to poor job performance, according to information obtained by the Federal Times, a D.C. newspaper for government employees. That’s about one out of every 1,698 workers, or a denial rate of 0.06%.
Believe it or not, that is actually up from recent years, according to data from the Office of Personnel Management.
What the hell. We say you need to work a little harder so all these outstanding government heroes can get bonuses, too. They deserve it.

I think part of the problem might be all the hell that'd break loose if a government supervisor were to actually give an employee a truthful evaluation. I can just see all the litigation. You just know that the very next day that poor supervisor would be working for the local Department of Transportation as the guy who gets to hold the Stop and Slow sign when their fixing the road.
After I quit my Fed Job no one would hire me because they actually said that they don't like hiring X-Government workers because they forgot how to work. That is the God's honest truth. That was actually said to me by numerous employers before I finally got a job and proved myself... HUMMM, I wonder if the government should create another disabled classification or oppressed minority and I mean MINORITY...
That's because it is the truth, government employees do not know how to work. All most government employees are good for is shuffling paper from one office to another, getting nothing meaningfull done. They are also pretty good at generating even more paperwork to justify their existence since they cannot do it with job performance.
Well, whiskey....I'm a fed employee and I work my ass off. But then I was brought up by conservative parents who instilled a healthy work ethic in me. There are a lot of fed employees who work, work well and actually care about their jobs. That being said, there are more than a few who definitely take advantage of the system because the system is broke. Please don't generalize for all government employees because it is not true.
I agree.. work ethic is critical, regardless of the nature of the employer. Some companies of sufficient size are not able to flush out their own slackers, for whatever reason (networks of loyalty being one..) I have co-workers who espouse very conservative views regarding welfare and entitlements, yet they rob the company blind, due to their own indolence and even malingering (i like to respond to a sick email with MALINGERER!!!!1)
Malingerer is a great word and fits well. I also love to apply that word to those who suddenly become disabled and as soon as they get their SSD are somehow magically normal again and yet they stay on SSD. There are an unbelievable number of people out there doing this. Almost another sector of government workers...
I agree kb, I knew how to work it was the system that was screwed. I was getting paid top dollar as a Machinist for the Air Force as a civilian and we swept floors or sat around as often as we worked... As a Machinist in the Private Sector you either work or go home and we don't make even close to the same pay as our Federal counterparts.
Hard to challenge anyone selse's job performance when your sucks so badly. We have a President, an entire Cabinet, the Supreme Court, the Congress and their assorted staffs doing a worse job than the average teenage counter person in fast food. How can they denigrate ANYONE's excuse for work?
The reviewers must not have been to the Post Office or the DMV recently.
They pay people to do that for them.
And they, of course, don't do THEIR job very well either.
Signs in government "work" areas.
"If you die while on the job, please fall to the floor so we can tell."
It's hard to get a bad review when your standards are so low.
Exactly. It is impossible to be fired from a government job unless you steal a great deal of money or resources, which always so easy to do in the first place.
