Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

Journalism today: NBC forwent televising the moment of silence for the victims of 9/11 in favor of an interview with the Kardashiam (nowJenner) MOM and her breast implants. I remember when to day still had actual NEWS.
Iceman, milkman, haberdasher, cobbler, TV repairman, print journalist...see a pattern?
Yes, at one time, they were all respected professions. Now, all but one are still respected.
That's what happens when you stop reporting the news and just go to creating it. This proves that the free market does indeed work. If you put out a crappy product, the people won't buy it.
Newspapers, like other media outlets used to do fair and fairly balanced reporting of the news. Then they got snotty and quit publishing "little new" and bias crept out from the editorial page and onto the front page. As fewer subscriptions were sold, they increased their ads, and started charging HEAPS for wedding and engagement announcements, classified ads,etc. The 2 papers in my town became one, and was an obvioulsy left leaning paper, with an agenda toward the Hispanic population (2/3 of San Antonio claims to be Hispanic. Some are, but don't claim it.) Now that paper is the size of a tabloid, and has far more ads than news. Why would anyone buy that?

You betcha. My family always read the Light, but I guess it was too conservative!
I read the Light too. I kinda miss that paper.
Yeah, me too. My grandparents read it, my Dad read it until it closed down. Sad. So sad.
Serves them right. Their product is crap.
What do they expect with the slogan '' All the news we feel fit to print''
I was always one of those who loved reading a paper while eating. I now read my laptop oi iPad or phone. I kept taking the paper until last month. Too many piling up. I finally cancelled my subscription .
You can hear the rumblings off in the backwaters of the Progressive swamp..."bailout...bailout...bailout..."
Say what you like about traditional print, and liberal bias, but the New York Times will ALWAYS be the premier source in America, if not the world, for the very finest quality fishwrap and birdcage liner.
Considering the number of readers that you will reach with a newspaper ad, you are getting ripped off.
I prefer to use non-recyclable plastic grocery bags (doubled). It feeds my passive-aggressive need to slap the enviro-weenies down, and keeps my garbage ever-so-tidy!
My commute used to take me past a massive landfill in N. Phoenix on the 101. People lived near that thing. I gradually learned to not take issue with the big blue recycling container.
Tell ya what, though.. when I was in San Fran for convention a couple months back, they had THREE kinds of trash and I felt the *facepalm* urge over and over.
