Gettin’ out while the gettin’s good: Huckabee alligator leaps fence and escapes

Political pundits are furiously analyzing the tactical repercussions to Mike Huckabee’s presidential aspirations after a nine foot alligator escaped from the Gov. Mike Huckabee Delta Rivers Nature Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

The American alligator, affectionately nicknamed “Shoes” by male staffers at the nature center – and “Purse” by the female staffers – apparently jumped a chain link fence and then slithered under a gate in a second fence. At least that’s what staffers hope after cautiously searching the grounds and peeking under the center’s main building, which sits up on stilts.

Arkansas Game and Fish Commission spokesman Keith Stephens, standing in the bed of his Game and Fish pickup truck, his eyes darting left and right, said he believes the alligator is now in the nearby swamps mingling with other alligators that live in the water. Then he quickly left the area, saying he had business elsewhere.

In spite of assurances by the nature center, many area grade schools have cancelled planned visits.

“It’s a bad sign for Huckabee’s chances in the presidential race,” said one longtime observer of Arkansas politics (who happens to be the author of this article). “In Arkansas, when the reptiles start jumping ship, well, your campaign is in trouble. You never saw gators leaping fences to escape the Gov. Bill Clinton Nature Center.”

  • If Huckabee wishes to find his gator all he has to do is contact The History Channel and get the names of one of the people that stars in the show Swamp People. I feel certain that they would not mind catching the gator for him. The fee might be a little steep, but it would make for great television.

Who knows, he could even have a pair of shoes, a purse and a brief case from their efforts.

  • I know that this is nerdy, but alligator briefcases are a thing of beauty...

I am going to be real with you though an alligator purse made with the underside of an alligator it is so nice, expensive and I cannot buy it, but if you go into a store and see one touch it.

Okay before you go all crazy about how I hate animals and what not just read this first... I don't care what you think I wear fur and wear leather honey deal with it!

    • I knew that there was going to be a tree hugging PETA whack job that was going to hate on me. At least have the balls and post something coward.

      • That's ok KQ, I gave you a thumbs up to even things out. I'm looking at my budget to see if I can afford a pair of boots made out of 'gator skin. They are beautiful but damn, over $300 bucks for a pair of boots?

    • The "underside of an alligator?" You mean like his butt? You want an alligator-butt purse?

        • Alligator butt tastes pretty damn good. I never thought it tasted anything like chicken though, and it is far more useful than chicken, because you need a lot more chicken to make a belt, wallet, briefcase, purse, pair of shoes or boots, than you do alligator.

        • Alligator, the other white meat. Except for the butt, it still tastes like brown round.

No kidding folks, have you ever eaten a 'gator burger? It's some kind of good! Or 'gator tail? It is cut crosswise, like a salmon, to make small steaks and it is as good off the grill as any pork chop you have ever eaten.

  • "affectionately nicknamed “Shoes” by male staffers at the nature center – and “Purse” by the female staffers"

Seems to show the staffers true feelings of the gators' future.

I really liked and voted for Mike Huckabee in the 08 primaries. I know he would have done better against Obama than McCain, especially in the debates. Huckabee, even though he hasn't stepped into the ring, is already the clear favorite in Iowa for 2012.

"The survey also asked respondents whether they believe President Barack Obama was born in the United States, and nearly half said they don't."

"Twenty-six percent are certain he's a U.S. citizen, 26 percent are unsure and 48 percent believe Obama was born somewhere else."
    WOW!
