I am forever seeing crap on Facebook about how Germany or Denmark or somebody had only 2murders last year, but America has had like 1000. Since just about all of Europe can fit inside Texas, I am not impressed. Listing deaths per 100,000 is far more accurate in comparison, and pretty much match what I think..
Did y'all notice that the countries with the highest murder rates are those where the citizens cannot legally own a firearm? Only the criminals and the government have guns, imagine that!
What the hell is up with Greenland? You wouldn't think an ice-covered slab of emptiness would have a murder rate higher than Chicago.

I was thinking more along the lines of "Smilla's Sense of Snow." I don't know how or why I originally read that novel, but I've never forgotten the underlying premise of the book, which I thought was very neat, that native Greenlanders have dozens of words for snow while English speakers (or Danish) only have one... a premise which turns out to be untrue. It's more a function of linguistics than vocabulary that allows the Inuit to describe snow more accurately. The Inuit language uses lots of qualifiers which act sort of like adjectives, so just like we might say "blowing snow" or "falling snow" or "icy snow" or "wet snow," the Inuit will add a qualifier on the fly that creates a new word describing the particular type of snow they're speaking of. One night, years after I read the novel, I turned on the TV and saw there was a movie based on the novel and it was every bit as good as the book. Plus Julia Ormond was the half-Inuit heroine and that was fine by me.
(This was relevant because the novel is about a murder and that's the topic of discussion. So there.)
