'Air attack plane' is a government misnomer . It is NOT the lead plane showing the bombers where to drop. Air attack planes carry gummint workers who operate radios and talk to ground crews, helicopters and fixed wing airplanes that are bombing the fire. The pilot orbits the fire at around 1500 feet above the ground in right-hand turns so the gummint bozo can be looking out his passenger window and marveling at the fire and cursing the idiots who are wandering around on the ground arguing over who gets to be the "fire-boss" on this one and where-in-hell is the lunch wagon. Guys who are signed-off on getting to play air-attack receive special training in "curse-word" theory and use. The gummint worker fancies hisself to be an "air traffic controller". The gummint worker is often times a double-dipper as far as
his being "retired' from the gummint service as well as actively working and collecting a paycheck from the same 'gummint'. The gummint did without "air attack" for many, many years, so why they are needed in this day and age is a true puzzle. I see air attack planes and crews are just more wanton and wasteful gummint cashing-in on citizens money.
The same reason the Education Dept. needs a SWAT team.
I have seen several of these guys working here in Kalifornia, I love airplanes, but you could not pay me to do that. I remember a year or two ago seeing the video of an elderly C-130 about to make a drop and the wings came off killing all three guys aboard. Sometimes I think it is more dangerous than combat, hats off to the guys who do it, they have my admiration.

Because Yogi and Boo Boo have developed mobile scud missile sites. Ranger Smith needs aerial spotter capabilities from which to deploy his artillery should these two loveable scamps leave a launcher out in the open long enough to hit.
False alarm here boys! Air attack refers to fire fighting by air. Dropping retardant such as Phos - Chek, or something else... Nothing sinister here, go back to why John Roberts attacked the Constitution.
The “air tactical coordination (air attack)” aircraft, sometimes called the lead aircraft is the plane that flies the path of the water/retardant drop a mile or so ahead of the plane with the retardant. You can see one example here

They're fascinating to watch in action. I assume they have special seats in all fire-fighting planes to make room for those giant huevos.
