Is the Chevy Volt Already Out of Gas? Speaking of gas. I thought this to be a fitting followup to the farting lightbulbs. August Volt sales were a whopping 302.

  • Only 2 volts have caught fire.  One after a crash test.  The technicians failed to discharge the battery as per instructions after a crash.  It took days for the battery to catch fire.  This is possible in any electric car.

    The second fire was not caused by the car itself.  The manual clearly states the circuit you use must be a home run and not to use extension cords.  It is still under investigation.

    The batteries are warrantied for 8 years.  A cab company in SF using Prius cars has never gotten under 200,000 miles on their batteries.  If the batteries go bad ... I GET FREE ONES!

    Batteries are 100% recyclable.  In fact, car batteries are recycled more than any other recyclable material.

    There are more hazardous wastes in an ICE car than in an electric.  There are no fluids in lithium ion batteries.  There is common, every day coolant used to cool the batteries.  The gas tank is a very special steel (not plastic) tank that is way beyond the standards of an ICE gas tank.

    I am not a salesman.  I am retired, served my country in hell holes with bullets whizzing by probably long before you were born.  I worked hard and long and payed my house off in 19 years (1994).  Bought American cars all my life, including 3 brand new Caddy's.  Could have bought a CTV, but I am sure glad I didn't.  No more Caddy's for me.

    The difference between you and me is that I don't stoop to making personal comments.  You dont even know me and I certainly don't know you.  What makes a person hate someone because of the car they drive?  

    Anyway, 2,000 + miles and still on Chevy's gas.  Total cost of charging ... $55.00.  Savings:  $200 a month.  $2,400 a year.  $16,000 in seven years and the car will still be under full warranty.

    • And no mention of the Strip Mined Lithium that has turned parts of Canada into something that looks like the surface of the moon, that the Chevy spark needs for the batteries. Or the effect of sub zero weather on the same batteries, which anybody with electronic experience knows drastically reduces the range.

      • This dork pimping the Volt is trying too hard. The car is not wanted by the masses, & no amount of gov't intervention will make it happen.

    • You are also taking a huge factor out of the equation, power plants all over the country are being shut down because of "CO2 Emissions" and soon that $55 recharge is going to be a $100 recharge, and so on and so forth until we perfect this green energy that we are switching too before we even know everything about it.. Energy is going to be extremely expensive in the near future, no power plants= no cheap electricity. I for one would rather have more expensive gas because my house doesn't run on gas.

    Those who don't understand how rebates for energy saving products work need to look to California. We have taxed ourselves since the first gas crisis in the 1970's and our energy usage has dropped by half per capita. The other 49 states have doubled in their usage. We used to be among the worst. That is because our homes and businesses are the most energy efficient in the country.

    Net result: We have avoided building 32 nuclear power plants at a cost of about $10 billion each.

    We have also taxed ourselves giving incentives for solar. We are now sixth in the world in solar use. Saving another $6 billion.

    Those who whine have also saved. We dragged them, kicking and screaming to the tax saving drinking well. Of course, they would rather pay the $400 billion we saved them, because that would be freedom! DUH!

        People are busting down the door to move here. We gain the equivalent of the city if Pittsburgh PA every year. Something I don't like, but it's a fact.

        We pay more, but we have to use less. And every state in the nation is hurting.

        By the way, our shortfall is lower than most states when you consider population. Illinois is right behind us with 1/3 the population. New Jersey's debt is half ours with only 1/4 the population.

  • I was picking up parts for my truck at the Ford dealer the other day. They are selling T-Shirts with a slogan on them that is something along the lines of "Made without government money".

    • Ford refused to be stimulated by the government. They get most of their business from taxpayers who are forced to assist the other companies, yet they're still turning a profit.

    A question for president 0, how does the earthquake/tsunami in Japan hurt our recovery when all the Japanese car firms have 20%+/- decreases and domestic have similar positive increases?
