Yahoo News explains:
Pay Pal founder and early Facebook investor Peter Thiel has given $1.25 million to an initiative to create floating libertarian countries in international waters.
Thiel as been a big backer of the Seasteading Institute, which seeks to build sovereign nations on oil rig-like platforms to occupy waters beyond the reach of law-of-the-sea treaties. The idea is for these countries to start from scratch–free from the laws, regulations, and moral codes of any existing place.
No laws, no regulations, no moral codes? Sounds more like anarchy to me than libertarian. We can’t quite imagine living in the middle of the ocean either, might be more exciting than I like if there’s a hurricane or tsunami.
Details says the experiment would be “a kind of floating petri dish for implementing policies that libertarians, stymied by indifference at the voting booths, have been unable to advance: no welfare, looser building codes, no minimum wage, and few restrictions on weapons.”
Will this actually work and people will manage to get along with no rules, regulations and a few LAW Rockets in their closets? Or, is it a plan for disaster?
Their best bet would be to declare war on the USA, quickly surrender and then hold their hand out for billions in war reparations and foreign aid.

So, where does one grow food on this....oil rig like platform? Any food that is not grown within a green house or garden would have to be imported. Fields for grazing animals are also needed on this platform, unless this is a vegetarian society. My guess is whom ever controls the food, controls this society. Its a nice thought, but I dont see it being a practical one with out rampant corruption.
I for one, recommend that they eat fish.
Yeah, I got kind of a chuckle from that -- in the middle of the ocean, "Where does the food come from?" Well, yeah, you'd need somewhere to grow vegetables, or have good reliable trading partners, but fish will go a long way!
LOL, you both got me on that one! I kinda figured they would fish, but since I am one of the only members of my family who loves fish, I assume not everyone would be happy eating just fish for a meat source. My comment reguarded other livestock, like beef, pork, or even chickens. Chicken would be the easiest of the those three to keep in my opinion.

Maybe drill for some oil on the back 40? And trade the excess of fish for beef, chicken, or whatever else you might need? Personally, I'd give up all the others for a steady diet of lobster.

I have a different idea, we sent liberals to these platforms, that way we can take our country back and they get their grand socialist experiment underway. Far, far from us.

Kind of sounds like how the U.S. used to be before big-government clowns (in both main parties) changed things.

Destroy it? Libertaria will be able to buy weapons for the same price the US gov't does. They don't cost much to make, its all the pain in the ass paperwork and regulations that make them expensive for us plebes.
I'm thinking that they would fire on it, and the Somalians would turn tail and run. That WAS a big discussion when I first saw this story on Yahoo, though. All those liberal nuts could do was rag on Libertarianism.

Actually, on the rare occasion that I do follow a thread on Yahoo news, the comments are against Obama and big government. I think that the MSM has succeeded in convincing almost everyone that Libertarianism is just a bunch of kooks that want NO laws, NO restriction on behavior, NO safety nets, NO taxes, NO military, NO government whatsoever. When in fact, all we want is strict adherance to the law.

One time Thiel collaborator Elon Musk is pretty big into building rockets and has the far-out goal of placing humanity on Mars. I don't know Musk's politics, or if he is still involved with Thiel, but it would be interesting to see if there was any Robert Heinlein in either of these mens libraries.
This sounds amazing. Libertarian communes? I love it! Unfortunately there aren't too many resources out in the middle of the ocean. Maybe we can get a large island or something.
Prediction:
