How’d we miss this one? Limbaugh compares O’Reilly to Ted Baxter

ted baxter bill o'reilly

We must have been too busy with stories about the Gusher in the Gulf, because we missed this story last week.

The Hill reports that the first shot has been fired in a possible civil war among conservative media giants:

In a new biography on sale Tuesday, Rush Limbaugh calls fellow conservative talk show host Bill O’Reilly a “Ted Baxter” — after the fictional character on the “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” who was portrayed as a vain, shallow, buffoonish TV newsman.

“Sorry but somebody’s gotta say it,” Limbaugh is quoted as saying in Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One by Zev Chafets. At press time, O’Reilly had yet to respond to the comment.

But it wasn’t just Bill-O who took grief from Big Rush. Limbaugh said he doesn’t consider any of his fellow conservative talk show hosts to be in his league.

“Sean Hannity and Mark Levin are protégés,” writes Chafets, “and [Limbaugh] has defended Glenn Beck.”

But Limbaugh “doesn’t really consider them, or anyone else, in his league.”

Bill O’Reilly as Ted Baxter? Why that’s absolutely insulting. Insulting to the memory of Ted Baxter.

  • So far 2010 is shaping up to be the hottest year on record. That is the entire planet not just in April in the USA. Not since the record breaking 1998 and 2007. But that is normal considering we are passed 350 ppm of Co2. It can only get worse.

Poor Ted Baxter, a fictional character, a joke on the stuffy sententious caricature of the evening news anchor, dragged into the real world. It just isn't right. Will a TV show be dragged in as an example for national security procedures? Oops, "24" already has, my bad. Maybe "Green Acres" for farming life next? Who can tell.

    • Yeah...but it's pretty cool outside my house right now. And don't you remember all that snow in D.C. over the Winter? That's PROOF that global warming is a hoax!!!

      Sincerely,
      Murray Slaughter

  • Keith Olberman did that some years ago so Limbaugh is following in his footsteps.
Though Limbaugh needs to look in the mirror as a fatter version of the Baxter character only without the humanity that Ted had deep down inside him. Ted was lovable,Limbaugh and O'Rielly and such are just ugly on the inside. As lovable as spiders or rabid dogs. And I mean no disrespect to either.

  • Thats what i get for using spell checker , Got to go , and listen to the rhetoric from the rocking chair O RIELLY !

    • Yeah...that's probably what it was. The old spell checker.

Guess it didn't catch the missing apostrophe in your "thats," the extra comma after "go," the missing period after "chair" and of course the O REILLY.

Why do I care about your spelling Tracy? It's because words are important. And you can't expect your opinion to be taken seriously if you don't care enough to present them correctly. ESPECIALLY the name of the person you're denouncing.

Here's the spelling of another name I have a feeling you light in to on a daily basis.

      B-A-R-A-C-K O-B-A-M-A

Write it down. It might come in handy.

      • I find it bad etiquette to correct others spelling and punctuation unless it is vital to what they were saying which is the point of this. I like the idea of everyone getting it correct but we should concentrate of the gist of what is written, not on its conveyance. Condescension is fun but not nice. It gets away from ideas and into persons. Just as criticizing someones spelling or syntax or punctuation instead of their ideas--diversions. Though we can learn here no one is a teacher. So please be more civil Booth to others. As we are civil to you. Thanx!

Can you attack the persons ideas or not

        • Interesting take Nightgaunt. Perhaps you didn't see my explanation to the person in question. It reads as follows:

Why do I care about your spelling Tracy? It’s because words are important. And you can’t expect your opinion to be taken seriously if you don’t care enough to present them correctly. ESPECIALLY the name of the person you’re denouncing.

Now I think that makes sense. Actually, it makes a little more sense than your stating that no one here is a teacher in a comment intended to teach me something.

I get what you're saying though. And I'll take it to heart the next time I see someone who is really trying to add something of import to the dialogue regardless of their beliefs.

But as long as the screaming fanatics choose to spew their hate and rage I'm going to call out their obvious lack of education when appropriate. I'm a PR guy so I naturally gravitate towards the one element everyone should keep in mind - Consider the Source. And if the source has something to say about the "Senete" and "Democrates" well...all bets are off. :)

      • Brother Booth,

Obama doesn't need anyone to take him on. The bumbling, self-absorbed fool is his own worst enemy. Even though I agree with you about the media fools (and yes, they are on both sides), your man Obama is a joke. A sad, dangerous joke. And a liar, if you will only pay attention.

My father was a graves registration officer. He picked up hundreds of dead soldiers in WWII so that you and I would have the right to disagree. I honor those dead and his service by thinking for myself and believe most on the right do likewise, even though entertained by the likes of Rush from time to time.

Forget about the Obama bashers and look at the truth for yourself. Juxtapose that against human history and human nature. Human nature ain't gonna change my friend, in spite of all the wishing and hoping from those on the left.

        • Even though I don't like your Carolinas "joke", I'm giving you a thumbs-up, here, to counteract all the thumbs-downs you somehow accumulated on this post.

          Trolls.

          • I guess the SCDiver means you live in SC and are a diver. Maybe a scuba diver? If so, we have more in common that you might think.

I have family living and buried in the Carolinas and believe those states to be the finest states on the Eastern Seaboard.

My first dive was before man walked on the moon in Blue Spring FL - my last on the Spiegel Grove. My goal was to dive every wreck in the Keys, and did on most of them, but had to quit just before they sank the Vandenberg.

The joke about marrying your sister is an old one – and is used wherever one lives. When I lived in FL, we used it on folks from GA and AL. When in LA – folks from AR. Now living in OH, it is a common friendly jab at those from KY or WV. So if I have offended – I apologize.

And the “thumbs up”? Thanks for the support although at this stage of my life I care little what others think. I read this sight to learn things available NOWHERE where else. From time to time, I check back on articles that have interested me, hence finding your comment today.

It's gonna be fun in November, huh?

Finally, if you are a diver, go for your triple certification (assuming you are a guy). I would have – but refused to jump out of a perfectly good airplane! So, I shall end life with only a double “diver” cert.

        • Well Mistella...I guess that's the difference between you and I.

I believe that human nature can change when given the appropriate conditions and I've always found the "that's just the way things are" train of thinking a little lazy, selfish and defeatist.

I would like to think that if given the choice people would choose happiness over sorrow, good over evil and life over death. But by throwing up our hands to the ills that effect our world, and not recognizing and addressing the true reasons for them, we're implying that we as human beings are perfectly fine with being much less than we could be.

Sorry Brother (or Sister) Mistella...I don't buy it.

          • Since you busted on tracycolorado about their grammar and spelling, I'm going to have to point out a word misused by you:

            "effect".

          • HA! You're "write." I kind of flew through that one.
Let's go with 'typo' as opposed to not understanding the proper usage of the word though, ok? :)

  • Orielly is a lukewarm liberal , and he will do and say anything for money . You will catch this clown giving subliminal messages to manipulate and influence for someones agenda . " N.A.S.A. HAS STATED THAT APRIL WAS THE WARMEST APRIL EVER RECORDED IN HISTORY " , ' POLLS SHOW THAT THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS WANT THE DEMOCRATES TO KEEP THE HOUSE AND SENETE " and in the same breath he said , " THAT WAS ONLY ONE POLL , AND POLLS MIGHT CHANGE " . Please be weary , there are many wolves in sheeps clothing

    • Hey Tracy,

Congrats. You spelled about half of the words in your post correctly. Well done.

And by the way, I think NASA may have reported that April was the warmest ever recorded because it was.

And maybe the Poll you referenced stating that most Americans would prefer that Democrats retain control of the House and Senate because it's true.

But anyway, who wants to hear the facts? They just get in the way of a good emotional and fear-fueled perspective, right?

Those darn DEMOCRATES will saying anything, huh?

      • Hi Booth! Here is some follow up to your comments. Enjoy.
And by the way, I think NASA may have reported that April was the warmest ever recorded because it was.
        >>>From the SAME report: "According to the Beijing Climate Center, China experienced its coolest April since 1961. Liaoning, Jilin and Shandong had their coolest April on record. Hebei, Anhui and Jiangsu had their second coolest April since records began in 1951."
Oh that pesky weather just won't follow our agenda! Grrr!!

And maybe the Poll you referenced stating that most Americans would prefer that Democrats retain control of the House and Senate because it’s true. Huffington Poll? hahhaa. Good one.
        >>New poll shows anti-incumbent mood more intense than 06, 94 (Daily Caller)
        >>NBC/WSJ Poll Shows Americans Don't Trust Democrat Policies
        >>My Personal poll = 100% of all people should eat cheese and cherry pick poll data.

But anyway, who wants to hear the facts? They just get in the way of a good emotional and fear-fueled perspective, right?
        >> Yes booth, facts are all around us. Let's try looking at THEM ALL.
Those darn DEMOCRATES will saying anything, huh?

        • Well Hi JJJRO!

I have to hand it to you. I mean, you systematically went through my post, that was in response to someone else, and proved every point I was making. Well done!

So did NASA report that April was the warmest month on record? They did.

And as the original poster didn't state any date to her poll, even though she obviously mixed-up Democrats and Republicans, my response was...true!

And I"m sorry...did you REALLY hold up the Daily Caller as a 'news source?" REALLY?

And you might just want to take a look at the WSJ poll as opposed to just "cherry-picking" a headline from a right wing website. Did you actually READ the poll of 100 participants of which only 47% stated they were 'very interested' in the November elections? If you had, I highly doubt you would have referenced it. Looks to me like the Democrats came out pretty damn good. But I guess you didn't reference the poll did you? You referenced a headline.

Come on buddy. You need to try a little harder than that. Give me something to work with, huh? You're not Limbaugh or O'Reilly and I'm not someone who believes things just because people say they're true.

Well if you're looking for facts here's one for you. FACT: I'm going to stop dropping by these silly, sophomoric websites. All I get out of them is a validation of my own beliefs. And what's the point in that?

Thanks for playing our game and enjoy your lovely parting gift.

  • An obscenely wealthy, four-time married drug addict getting in the grill of an obscenely wealthy, three-time married sexual aggressor. Wow...a battle that will take place on the moral high ground no doubt.

Wow..you guys can sure pick 'em. Take a nice long drink at the fear trough and keep following the advice of these pillars of morality kids. I'm sure they appreciate it.

  • An arrogant rich white guy insults another arrogant rich white guy (who in turn in many ways insults the first arrogant rich white guy and it goes round and round)... *yawns* Boring. Limbaugh is right and O'Reilly is right when he makes "observations" about a "right wing radio personality" whom he never names by name. They are both rich arrogant white guys who are very loud, very opinionated and hack everything they can put their names on.

Limbaugh WILL never have the appeal to be on TV like O'Reilly and O'Reilly actually did very well on radio until he gave it up, so when it comes to success O'Reilly is definetly up there in League and hence the envy and stupidity coming from Limbaugh. The same can be said from O'Reilly side that even though not a threat to him as a tv personality, Limbaugh is louder and perhaps richer and very consequential to the game (attracts a lot of listeners).

I can only take so much of Limbaugh and O'Reilly. They can both be arrogant jerks. However instead of being stupid they should focus their time and energy into spreading the truth and making sure that people get the information they need to make the right decisions for themselves.

    • KQ, Right on brother (fist bump). IMHO, guys like these actually help the likes of Obama. Those of us firmly entrenched on the right cannot be swayed - ditto the dreamers on the left. But the middle ground always want to be "fair" and "open" etc. They are more easily turned off than turned on. Someone very smart once told me you catch more flies with honey............ But honey doesn't sell books, does it?

  • The one guy I trust and do his best to get it right: Shep Smith

Best "call out" entertainers of all time: John Stewart/Saturday Night Live.

Best boots on the ground reporting: Michael Ware, Nic Robertson, Peter Bergen (CNN).

    • Wow, you actually said something I tend to agree with.

The Shep Smith thing. Shep's awesome.

  • I agree with Vic. we've got bigger fish to fry and infighting is just a waste of time. I am not personally a huge fan of O'Reilly, but i still consider him to be generally on the right side. And as for rush saying that nobody is in his league, that's just his sense of humor, nothing really insulting or smug about that. However if we are all touting our favorites then i gotta say: GLENN BECK ROCKS!!!
