Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

        The U.S. continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government's neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the U.S. suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect its citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.

  • all things have small beginnings! The petition may have been formed by the people and not by the state, but it was submitted to the Obama adminestration petition board. Even if it is thrown out it is still raising awarness to what is going on! Texas being a soveriegn state i dont understand why they would need a petition when in all actuallity they can pull out anytime. I have seen more shit talk on sites like these (not including this one) from people who have no idea what they are talking about saying things like, well let the southern states withdraw will see who needs who, o they cant remember what happen last time they did this and they lost the civil war, or my favorite we'll let the U.N pearcfully resolve the issue. HAHA ok for starters the South controls over 96% of the nations oil and gas, ports, industry and food not to include NASA is in Texas so there goes that! The civil war was not about slavery as history will so make it out to be it was about heavey taxation, goverment opression and control of our ports the same thing that is starting to happen now with the Obama adminstration (we clearly do not relye on or need the north as we did in the 1800's it is in totall reverse). As the U.N goes are any of you aware of what has been going on this week? Obama is trying to give the U.N the right to come into our country and take our guns by force any oppossed is to be shoot! Obama can say what he wants about its only for small firearms and assault rifles, but really reasearch the U.N's version of this treaty and you will find it to be not so! If this treaty is passed you wont have to worrie about the states withdrawing and starting a war, this treaty alone will start a war because no one will openly give up their rights to bare arms and if they do they are not american and they are giving into tyreeny. Americans have long forgotten that they are in controle of the goverment not the other way around and the second admendment clearly states that we have the right to bare arms and start a melitia and over throw our goverment when their acts are deemed un-constitutional to our rights as an american! So why is over half the country ignorant and blindly follow the Obama adminestration? And yes I am from La and i signed the petition!! I appoligize if i am not totally clear on some of the things i have so much i would like say going through my mind

      • Unless I missed something, how does a treaty abrogate the 2nd Amendment?

        I don't think it does, but your 2nd amendment rights can punch holes in any treaty.

      • There has long been a question as to if a treaty ratified by the Senate or even Presidential agreements will carry the full force of the Constitution and abrogate anything that preceded it due to some of the wording in Article VI (This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.). Who knows really . . . but I suppose if they can use the general welfare clause to free themselves of the limits of enumeration (even if the clause was never intended so and even if it had been would have been abrogated by the 10th Amendment) and the authority to levy taxes as a catch all granting congress unlimited power of compulsion (so long as a tax is involved) and if imminent domain has been extended to Walmart in order to ensure their right to take your property . . . well I guess using this as a method of suppressing the 2nd Amendment wouldn't really surprise me.

          In essence, Treaties are (part of) supreme law of land, notwithstanding what's already existing in the Constitution

          • Didn't we hash this over before recently? Read it again, you got the right bit -- it's referring to the constitutions of the states, not the US Const. Simply establishing that A treaty is Federal law and trumps state law, if there are discrepencies. I do not believe anyone has ever asserted that an international treaty which contained de facto un-Constitutional provisions would supercede the USC.

            Of course when this was written, about the sum total of what they were thinking of woulda been alliances and trade/tariff deals. This was intended to prevent states from making their own deals on the side which might conflict with Fed. agreements and possibly undercut other states -- for example if Virginia charged a penny a pound tax on imported fabric or something, and Maryland decided the same stuff could come in for free.

      • ha i will admit typing has never been a strong point for me, but i am glade there are people who understands what i am talking about and what is going on in this country and why these states are wanting to withdrawl. so far that i understand louisiana, mississippi, alabama, texas and missiouri have started petitioning

          as well your early American spelling skills. did you know that it wasn't until i believe the late 19th, early 20th century, that most Americans spelled pretty much however they wanted to? Yep.

  • If Texas follows a path that they have threatened to do over the years and pull out, I'm going. I was born at St. Davis Hospital in Austin and I will (re)declare my citizenship.

  • I'm nothin' but a Damyankee born n bred, and I've crossed words here and there with friends and acquaintances over some aspects of that "Late Unpleasantness," but by God and Jeff Davis if anybody starts pulling free of DC now, I'll be there if I have to row my family and myself from Cape Cod Bay right up the Calcasieu Waterway to Lake Charles.

  • If we draw a line down the middle of the country than swing to the right and include the southern states that would form the letter 'L', which would stand for LIBERTY!

  • If they do, I suggest they get with Texas and form a country. I'll be moving soon after that if der leader hasn't restricted movement without proper papers.

  • I think trying to impose martial law on Louisiana is one sure way to get lots of National Guard members killed, unless they follow their conscious and not orders.

    • I would not mess with the "bitter clingers" in Louisiana. Most of them are a lot better with there weapons and skills than your average weekend warrior
