Mayor Bloomberg turns down food donated to homeless

Mayor Bloomberg turns down food donated to homeless people. The mayor’s food dictators are afraid donated food might be too salty, thereby violating one of New York City’s nutrition edicts. God knows, too much salt in the kugel is a big worry when you’re sleeping on sidewalks.

  • If the food is to unhealthy for the homeless, then give it to the next level down, the occupee'ers. My bad, they'll only eat food from the evil corporations they hate.

  • Typical leftism: forbid private charity, then loftily announce that "Private charity doesn't work," and that the only solution is more government.

    • yeah this is really stupid.
Maybe this isn't necessarily the plan, but the system does seem to naturally funnel activity back into government hands.. then opportunists make plans around the system

    • Yes!!!!!! That is yet another aspect of this for sure. Minimizing private charity so the only outlet for "charity" is the goverment/tax payers.

      • And the favored government contractors. Who I'm sure have greased ALL the right palms. Or would that be the left palms?

  • Thank God for Nanny Bloomburg!

OOPS! Am I allowed to say God in NY?

    Please don't arrest me!

  • That a billionaire would turn down food for hungry people that liberals like him create because it doesn't meet his standards has got to be the best definition of arrogant liberalism I've ever come across. I can just imagine him jailing someone for buying Burger King and Litttle Debbie's for a starving mom and her children. Sickening.

    • I was about to state pretty much what you stated. This is the definition of hypocrisy about how liberals care for the poor but they only care if the poor are eating according to their billionaire/millionaire liberal standards. It is really pathetic and disgusting.

      • I guess the guy that I bought a McDonald's hamburger for last week shouldn't have been quite so appreciative. I could have killed him!

          • This really pisses me off. I have a standard when it comes to people begging. If they've parked their ass in front of a liquor store, and insist that I give them money, they can f&%k off. If they are near some kind of grocery store of fast food place, and I offer them a sandwich, and they don't insist that I give them money instead, I get them something to eat. I don't want the government coming down on me because I bought food for someone who was hungry.

This is the height of cronyism, protecting the food contractors that gave all the right bribes, at the cost of hungry people getting something good to eat.

          • On my way to a job one day, I pulled into Mickey D's for breakfast. I saw a guy by the dumpster writing a sign so I offered him one of my sandwiches. He said "no thanks, a lady just bought me breakfast."
I don't know about you, but if I was hungry and begging, I wouldn't be turning down free food that I could save for later. So I drove off.

        • Yes that would be the argument. Even if the person is not going to die right that minute, you could be inflicting disease upon the person long term. Soon people who do private acts of charity and feed poor people with what they have available to them at the time, and outside of government standards, will be breaking a new law that would be created if things continue as is. People think it is a joke but government is truly out of control.

  • I'll bet he didn't turn down any bribes...that would be "campaign contributions" to the gullible dolts out there.

  • Nanny's administration wouldn't admit it, but the donated food undoubtedly tasted better than the official swill, and thus made his regime look bad.

  • Anyone who has read my comments on the sudden interest in food and nutrition by the Left knows that I have been saying this was a power grab all along. Today, I am proven right. With the local State able to dictate how the food is given to the poor, it removes the influence of the Catholic Church along with other charities. But primarily the Catholic Church which is what this government has now declared open war upon.

  • It reminds me of a story - back in the 80s or 90s before she died, Mother Theresa tried to open a small facility in NYC to care for dying AIDS patients. Her group selected a building to use and applied for the necessary city permits. It was a multi-family apartment building so the city said she had to put in an elevator. She said "we can't afford an elevator and we don't need one, our caregivers will carry the patients up and down the stairs." The city said, "Nope, gotta have an elevator." So she and her group had to withdraw their plan because she couldn't afford the damn elevator.
