The Obama-rama: More Obama’s popping up everywhere

In a case of remarkably bad timing, politicians around the world are attempting to jump on the Barack Obama bandwagon just as its wheels are starting to come off here in the United States.

For example, in Russia, an immigrant from Guinea-Bissau named Joaquim Crima is running for office in his small town on the Volga River. Using a twist on a common Russian phrase, Crima’s advertising campaign says, “I will toil like a Negro.”

In Great Britain, the Labour Party has a rising star named Chuka Umanna. He’s black. That may be a tenuous connection to President of the United States, but it’s enough to earn him the nickname “the British Barack Obama.”

In Italy, a small-town mayor named Sandy Cane is known as “the Italian Barack Obama” despite the fact that he belongs to the far-right Northern League. One of the party’s campaign posters features a photo of a ship overflowing with African boat people. The headline is, “We stopped the invasion.”

The other Barack Obamas all claim they’ve never met Reverend Jeremiah Wright.
