Network TV news bids a fond farewell to another 739,000 disgruntled viewers

The final ratings are in for the 2008-2009 TV season and it’s ugly. Viewers are abandoning network TV news even faster than millionaires are moving out of Manhattan.

MediaBistro.com has the happy news:

The ratings are in the for just-completed 2009-2010 network evening news season. And when compared to 2008-2009 season, “NBC Nightly News” ABC’s “World News” and the “CBS Evening News” have lost a combined 739,000 Total Viewers and a combined 338,000 A25-54 viewers.

“Nightly News with Brian Williams,” which finishes at #1 for the 14th season in a row, lost the least: -138K Total Viewers (8.698M in 08-09 v. 8.560M in 09-10), while Katie Couric’s CBS program, lost the most: -343K (6.053M in 08-09 v 5.710M in 09-10). “World News” which saw Charles Gibson anchor the first few months of the season, and Diane Sawyer picking up in December, lost the most younger viewers: -221K (2.351M in 08-09 v. 2.130 in 09-10).

Remarkably, the 2008-2009 TV season included coverage of the 2008 presidential election and inauguration, which should have given viewership a boost.

So on broadcast TV, ABC News lost viewers. CBN News lost viewers. And NBC News lost viewers. On cable TV, MSNBC lost viewers. CNN lost viewers. And HLN lost viewers. Only Fox News gained viewers.

So here’s a serious question: Would all those left wing networks prefer losing every last viewer to providing balanced news coverage? Or will one of them finally see the light?

What do you think?

  • Actually, I find all the bickering that goes on between left media and Fox to be rather hilarious. I don't know what I would do for entertainment if all of them became un-biased.

  • "So here’s a serious question: Would all those left wing networks prefer losing every last viewer to providing balanced news coverage? Or will one of them finally see the light? "

No, because they are so steeped in lefty mysticism they are unable to comprehend anything else. The endless stories about America being a land of bigots and minorities being hardest hit is a reptilian reflex. Even the print media is like this from the NYT to my local liberal bird cage liner....always the same type of story with the same segues.

Maybe all the real thinkers and editors were fired long ago for a MS word form letter that goes "______ impacts community. Minorities hardest hit. ______, a woman says that she can't _______her children unless the government steps up its funding for _______. Otherwise they'll go hungry and or stupid. "

The media doesn't get it because they have always done it that way.

I think the internet is showing how intelligent some people can be with free access to information and they're proving that the Ivy League degrees don't mean anything outside of networking. The elite are no smarter than the middle class but their hubris prevents them from seeing us as their equals.

I personally want to see the dollar explode and economy crash, if only for just 6 months. Then we'll see how well the caviar crowd can get by using their own knowledge, skills and personalities the rest of us are forced to develop from childhood but they seem to be given a pass on.

  • Wait, I don't get it. This website is called "I HATE THE MEDIA", and yet you all seem to have a hard-on for FoxNews. Shouldn't your website be rejecting all forms of cable news? I don't know about you, but I can't watch any of it without throwing up a little in my mouth, and that goes ESPECIALLY for Fox"News".

    • Just a suggestion Norm.....

If you want to slam Fox like the Big Boys do you should use the standardized "Progressive" term FAUX news, otherwise we might think you're not really serious.

    • Norm,
      {and yet you all seem to have a hard-on for FoxNews}

I'm sorry. I have not been here long (6 weeks or so) and have posted a few times, and didn't realize that I was showing my "love" of Fox news...Oh, that's right, I haven't. Be careful when you use terms like YOU ALL. Sometimes we all ain't what you think we is.

  • Someone must be funding or subsidizing these left wing propaganda machines, probably with tax dollars or "stimulus" funds.

  • "So here’s a serious question: Would all those left wing networks prefer losing every last viewer to providing balanced news coverage? Or will one of them finally see the light?"

    John 3:19 (NASB)
This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.

  • I gave up watching most "news" programs a long time ago. About the time they had to add in "news" about Hollywood "celebs", the new shows coming up on that network, Binky the one legged dog being adopted at the animal shelter, jolly weathermen or chirpy weatherchicks that wasted 7 minutes telling me what the weather was today and that there is snow/rain coming into some area 2 days away from me, while giving me a 10 second look at what will be MY weather tomorrow and of course getting it wrong. Then a look at sports, which to be honest I would watch for scores and high lights.

So what replaced all of this drivel..The computer, The Weather Channel, And ESPN. News when I want it, how I want it and no doe eyed news reader trying to give me the sads about their slant on the news.
