NY Times CEO exiting, without explanation

NY Times CEO exiting at year end – no explanation, no successor named. The explanation is she’s running a dying business and nobody’s figured out how to monetize “journalistic content” profitably yet. But don’t cry for her, Argentina, she’s floating to earth on one of those golden parachutes that the NYT would be blistering if some other company paid it out to a failed CEO – not to mention the Times’ occupado pals.

Bonfire of the Absurdities: After 35 year career writing software for IBM mainframes, am now self-employed contractor thinking of joining a union and striking for higher wages. Cured morbid fear of heights when I learned to look at them as lengths standing on end. Uncompromising in refusal to accept browser cookies. Amateur investor who has accumulated a small fortune in the market after starting out years ago with a large one. For recreation, I run, hike, kayak and play tennis but will not consider synchronized swimming under any circumstances.

  • $4.5 million in pay to keep her on as a "consultant" for the next year? No wonder the rag is going broke if the executives are getting that kind of pay when sales are in the toilet.

    • That makes sense to me. Keeping her on as a consultant for a year. That is probably just the amount of time it will take to finish them off completely!

  • It is the GM of newspapers. It was once great. Now it is just a shell overtaken by a new and more nimble competitor(s).

  • The Reuters story makes a sorry attempt to spin the NYT problem on the internet. However, reading the comments to the Reuters story is quite entertaining. It would also be enlightening to the management of that rag if they would read them. But, I see the management plugging their ears and going "lalalalala". Good, all the sooner it will go all the way down the tubes.

    • Yeah, and it leaves newsprint on my butt. I wrote to them, asking them to use softer paper and to use non-smearing inks. The library hasn't replied yet.
