That’s Barbara’s photo to the right and this is a quote from “her” online resume:

From 2005 – 2007 Barbara held an Australian Research Council Discovery grant titled ‘Reconfiguring intimate life: Gender and sexuality as sites of national redefinition in Australian since 1996’.

But wait. There’s more:

Barbara Baird lives and works on the land of the Kaurna people, the Indigenous owners of much of the country occupied by the city of Adelaide. She heads the Dept of Women’s Studies at Flinders University. Her research has considered the history and cultural politics of reproduction and sexuality. Her concern is to place the categories of race and nation at the centre of such research via the use of theories of critical race and whiteness studies alongside feminist and queer theories.

  • Certainly an unusual choice, but seriously who cares if she chooses to break from the norm. She isn't hurting anyone. Plus, her job is to invoke discussion. Maybe she did it to be controversial. Maybe she didn't. Remember, Aristotle was considered to be crazy for bucking the system and saying that the Earth rotated around the sun.

  • YOU ARE ALL A BUNCH OF CYBERBULLIES. This woman has every right in the world to not wax her facial hair. It is a cultural assumption that women do not/should not have facial hair. Think Frida Khalo. And grow up.

    • Frida Khalo had no mustache, but I'd bet that given the chance, she'd have happily done something about them bushy eyebrows.

      Stop your crying. Baird is a woman who doesn't care all that much about her appearance. I have yet to see a copy of a female magazine that glorifies a female mustache -- people being what and who they are, I am reasonably sure that she was notified long ago that her facial hair was an invitation to ridicule.

      Lack of female facial hair being a beauty trait across most contemporary cultures, I'd have to say that she either willingly invites people to mock her in order to feel 'oppressed', or just doesn't give a damn. Why should anyone be surprised when mockery happens?

      Maybe you're just jealous that she has a better mustache?

  • It appears that any mis-fit can buy a degree, look like a cross bred human and get paid a very large salary for being so bloody idiotic at Flinders Uni.Surely with so much going for"IT" the Uni should have "IT" running the whole show. May have to shave "IT's" armpits and glue the hair on the chin to complete the look to get a pay rise for the added non-resposibility. Well done Bra bra.

  • OMG. I cannot believe this photo is real. If it is how can a real woman allow herself to look like this? This is not right. I feel really bad for her husband. If she is married... is she married...? Does she have kids? *shudders*

  • People can't help how they look, but my very first reaction was "What's a guy supposed to do with a name like Barabar?"

    But my second reaction was that her (his?) philosopy is much more terrifying than her (his?) photo.
