Putting the wow in pow wow: Indian tribe approves gay marriage

It was inevitable, we suppose, that in this day of real and imagined rights and slights that gay Indians would demand the right to cozy up in their teepees with whomever they want.

Brokeback Mountain broke new ground and you knew, or at least you suspected, that as soon as we had gay cowboys, gay Indians would want in on the action, too.

It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “putting an arrow in your quiver.”

The Associated Press has the heap big headline:

The Suquamish Tribal Council voted Monday to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples on its reservation near Seattle, after the measure gained support from more than 100 tribal members at a meeting this spring.
The new law allows the tribal court to issue a marriage license to two unmarried people, regardless of their sex, if they’re at least 18 years old and at least one of them is enrolled in the tribe.

It will be up to other courts to decide if unions granted under the Suquamish ordinance will be recognized elsewhere in Washington, said the tribe’s attorney, Michelle Hansen.

Gay marriage is still illegal in the state, but the Legislature this year approved a measure recognizing same-sex unions from other jurisdictions, which include other nations. State lawmakers also have approved so-called “everything but marriage” laws, granting same-sex couples many rights.

“Walks With Swish,” the minister said, “do you promise to love, honor and obey Lisping Fox?”

  • Hello Geoff, I have enjoyed reading your comments in other threads and look forward to reading more of them! I would like to let you know how much I respect you, I cant imagine how much crap you've taken for being both gay and conservative. I truly dont intend or mean any offense towards you or the gay community but I dont agree with gay marriage. For myself its a matter of my religious beliefs, God's own defining of marriage and my faith in God. I just cannot argue with God and his laws. But I Do Not condone any mistreating or hating of individuals because they are gay. I respect you as a person and an individual, I look forward to reading your opinions and possibly debating on things we may not agree on. I only hope you can respect me by the same measure. I know this may be a sensitive subject so I wanted to make myself clear that I hold no animosity towards you and welcome you here, the issue of gay marriage however may just be something we dont see eye to eye on. I wish you all the best and I am glad you are here!

  • To those who are weak-minded enough to thumb down those of us who openly support equal rights for gays, I urge you to comment, in detail, what your problem with us is. Until you do, you are just an uneducated simpleton who sits in the shadows like a coward.

  • Gay marriage is a non-issue with me. I'm sure divorce attorneys love the idea. Most of the people I see calling out people for being gay are desperate liberals who have no argument (read Michelle Bachman's husband and that BS). My wife and I have friends who are straight and gay....the key word is friend, nothing else matters.

    • I actually don't know of anyone in my circle of conservative friends who have a problem with gays or equal rights to gays. Maybe this is just my microcosm of the environment, but I do feel our feelings should be represented in higher office.

      • Seems to be a common sentiment in my circle as well. We don't have any issues with the gay community either.

  • Hi Geoff, I was just reading thru the previous posts and I, for one, want to extend a hearty welcome. The left loves to paint all conservatives as homophobes. I know there has to be more gay conservatives out there and I sincerely hope they become more vocal in their politics.

  • Olivia is going to crap her drawers when she realizes folks on this site aren't a bunch of hate mongers! Lol

    • Geoff, you haven't known the lovely Olivia as long as we have. She's not going to realize anything.

  • @Sidekick, David Bishop, and Rocking Horse Guy, y'all are awesome. Thank you for your kind words. I wish the left would b so kind. Just nastiness and snarkiness on that side. If I had a dime for evey time I got called an Auntie Tom on some those sites, I could erase the deficit by myself! Lol

  • I know some of you won't like me now, and some of you will not have a problem wth me, but that's ok. I've dealt with a lot more hate from the left for being conservative than I have ever got from the conservative side for being gay.

    • I have heard from others in the gay comunity that it is harder to come out as a consevative than it is to come out as being gay.

    • Geoff, I have several friends that may or may not be oriented differently. Frankly, I don't care. They're good friends. That's really all I care about. The ones in relationships? I wish them the best -- the sort of happiness I've found with my wife.

I think that the entire gay marriage issue has been monstrously overblown -- that there are people who feel they can win elections by manipulating people's baser emotions into enough hate and fear to get them into office. This hatred only poisons the souls of the people that exploit it.

So, Geoff, I wish you and the people that you care about the best. Welcome to our little group.

      • I honestly approach everything like this from a "who is harmed" perspective. Like prostitution for example. I think it should be legal. Marijuana, I think it should be legal, (and tax it!). Gay marriage. Legal. These are victimless activities that we as a nation stand to profit from if utilized and implemented correctly.

Woah guys, Olivia is going to have a heart attack when she reads all this love-speak. Or maybe she'll just take up hating gays because it is an opportunity for her to oppose us "far right wingers parroting Rush Limbaugh."

          • I thought it would never happen, Max. I agree with you on something. But then again, I'm against ALL taxation when it goes to the kind of wasteful nonsense it's being used for these days.

          • You never know. If we keep the discussion civil, we might find more common ground.
As for the drug legalization issue, the few people in government, or in position to influence government, that call for legalization, all want to use the money received in taxes to fund rehabilitation of drug users. I say if you're stupid enough to use them, you're on your own.

          • I do not completely agree. I believe in second chances. Some people may have went down the wrong path or faced such horrific events in their life. Not that I'm making justifications for drug addictions but I feel some of those individuals deeply regret and truly wish they can turn their lives around. So I'm willing to give them ONE chance in terms of rehabilitation in order to turn their lives around.

        • I'm pretty sure Olivia hates herself more than anyone else. How else can one explain the horrible outlook on life that she projects?

    • Hey Geoff, my post above is an affirmation of my support for universal equal rights. I was trying to joke with the alimony thing. I assure you that you won't run into any hostility from any of the regular posters here that I've gotten to "know".

FWIW, when I was on active duty in the 1980s, I served with another officer who I later learned is gay. We are still friends and he has shared with me how difficult it was to serve in the pre-DADT era. He too has been through a lot, If I were to make a homophobic statement, then I would betray a 26 year friendship. That's not going to happen.

  • I've posted on here ocasionally. And my posts have been liked and plaese believe me when I tell you all I am very conservative except for the gay marriage issue and the DADT issue. Full discloture: I'm gay. I've been with my partner for 6 yaers plus. We both believe in law and order, gun rights, taking care of our own before spending billions of dollars on other countries, not leeing illegals suck off the American tit, and a strong defense. All we want is to be legally protected in our relationship, for people like us to be able to adopt, and to be able to serve our country without being witchhunted. I have no intesrest in undermining my country. I love my family and my country. How the hell much more American do you want me to be? Liberals make me sick for the most part. Believe me, there are a lot of us who would go to the conservative side ifif the politicians we would normally vote for didn'5 hate us so much.

    • Geoff:

I wanted to say that in a previous company I've since sold, my CFO was openly gay and the highest paid employee on staff was openly gay. I, and I know I speak for Mr. Editor as well, have no issue with anyone being gay. Zero. And I don't know one conservative, personally, that has a problem with gays.

But we do like to make fun of the "gay movement" the a hilarious opportunity arises, as we do of any radical movement.

    • None of the base of true conservatives/libertarians hate you. It's the RINOS and country club republicans who do. It pains all of us to have such a weak GOP field for presidency. But we thank you so much for your story and we appreciate your struggle. I truly hope the men and women in office can pass some sort of gay marriage bill or simply, as a true libertarian would desire, ensure that the government doesn't acknowledge or privilege marriage at all.

        • Honestly, friend, look up and read the comments. This is an extremely right wing forum. I have yet to read one post from someone who is like "F*** THIS NOISE!" Honestly, the most anti-LGBT comment is from a person who is hoping that when this becomes mainstream, gays aren't given any more rights then other married couples.

Do not worry friend. I honestly believe the homophobia among the right is ceasing, though it still contains a few "champions" in it's cause. Forward progress and social networking will soon prove to show those old-timers that the gay community isn't so bad, is a voter base, and deserve equal rights.

          • Ok, so I'm not really a right winger, not even a Republican. Nonetheless, I'm standing right there next to you, Geoff. I really don't care what sex the person you choose to be with is. Why would it matter to me? I can marry anyone I want, why shouldn't you be able to? I don't understand this fight.

  • I agree with you both. I don't see why it has to be a political agenda at times for both parties.

    • As long as it is understood that no SPECIAL rights are being extended to gays or anyone else, then I'm good to go with this. I do think it will be funny if and when a guy has to pay alimony to another guy when they divorce. That could be a potential media event for a few days.

      • As for special rights. I think there is a precedent of that with hate crimes legislation. Due process becoming a different set of expectations depending on if you belong to a protected group or not. Of course that is not to mention that it is a bit Orwellian (well more than a bit) to think on the full implications of punishment based on hate . . . and then thought.

As for my thoughts on gay marriage. It seems like an equal protection/access issue to me. I believe what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. There must be one set of laws for each and everybody. So I've no issues with it being legal.

Of course at the end of the day I don't really believe that government should be involved with marriage anyway. There should be civil unions for all to account for certain legal issues like property and insurance but other than that marriage should be in the arena of churches or other institutions of the individuals choosing or creation. Just MHO though.

      • Perhaps we could end the entire default "kids go to mom, dad pays forever" with this. If so, this could be more social progress then thought!!

    • I don't know. I think it's a non-issue. I think the whole gay thing is a non-issue. Seems like most of the posted comments so far concur. We'll probably get a couple of troll haters soon enough to make us look like "queer-hatin gun-totin folk" though. Media Matters needs ways to scare the gay community into voting democrat.

      • Personally, I've never understood the problem. What do I care if two people want to get married?

        • I don't see it as anything that would hurt me in any way. I don't understand what the issue is either.

          • Fweetness and Precious, so nice of you to visit. I do so enjoy it. May I offer you some tea? cookie perhaps?
