“Terry McAuliffe,” Ralph Nader told the Washington Post, “is slipperier than an eel in olive oil.”
What brought about this uncharacteristically countrified attack?
Nader claims that McAuliffe offered his presidential campaign money to stay out of 19 battleground states John Kerry needed to defeat George W. Bush in 2004.
According to Nader, McAuliffe “basically said that if I stay out of 19 states which are close between Kerry and Bush, he would provide resources to me in the remaining 31 states.”
“He threatens, he promises, he cajoles, he jokes, he charms, he intimidates,” Nader said. “He really is not someone who should be governor and in possession of the public’s trust.”
A spokesman said that in his role as chairman of the DNC in 2004, McAuliffe “engaged in a conversation with Nader to try to convince him not to run, or at the very least to not compete in the targeted battleground states.” But no-no-no-no, he “never offered (Nader) any money” to get out of the campaign. Heaven forbid.
Nader is nuts. McAuliffe’s a liar. We don’t know who to believe. But if we had to put money on it, we’d go with Nader.
