Scam I am: ReachOut competes with Safelink in the government cell phone for the poor scam

• I started with $5.00 for 350 minutes now im paying $20.00 for the same minutes. I dont know if they rise the fees. I just been on it for 4 months. It sucks

• This service is a scam, plain and simple. I applied for it and ordered a phone on top of it. They didn't send the phone, but gladly took my money. I have tried contacting them several times through email and their "live operators" [which never reply] and even calling them, getting someone who couldn't speak english. They have bluntly refused to respond and I am out the money I spent on the phone. Service is purely a con to take advantage of low income people. If you use it, don't buy a phone and don't count on the 'free phone' they send you to be worth using.

• I am one of the suckers with reachout wireless. I have a phone and have tried for 3 days to get ahold of someone. I can't. It's like impossible. They do not talk to you, but very quickly to get your money at any time of the day or night. There are 2 draw backs: one, you have know sims card. Two, you have no internet access at all. So know matter how good it is or looks, these two never are included. My phone broke, and I lost all my data. They could not retrieve it, and I have tried for 3 days to call them. I am on always on hold, or on a recording. These people do not play professional. I will do anything to expose them. If you want more informantion, you have my email. Thanks.

  • i never ever had a problem with my reach out cell phone when i go too there web site i always get in touch with some one will respond too me so whats the problem yes the phones are used but mine works just wonderful sto[p bitching get on with your life

    • Dena, the service sucks because it's government contracted welfare. You're getting it for free. I'm paying for yours, AND mine. If you want good service, go buy a phone from a real company.

• We're talking about lifeline service here. My 90 year old mother, who lives on an income of $1200/month gets a discount on her monthly phone service. She needs to reapply every year with proof of low income. She - and anyone else who qualifies - could do it on either a cell or a regular phone - not both. The same is true of Link-up, a one-time $30 discount on either a regular phone or a cell phone (not both) for low-income people. I'm willing to share with elders, disabled people and those who can't jobs. Glad I have one.

  • I wouldn't want my 90 year old mom to depend on reachoutwireless for an emergency. They send out refurbished phones about to go out so you will purchase another phone. They make it difficult to purchase minutes by only accepting a money gram. It's a service to take advantage of the disabled and elderly. The company profits by receiving grants from the Federal Govenment and using it to make a profit to sell their own stuff. It's so sad that people believe they are getting help when they are paying more than someone with a regular monthly plan and have less coverage. I'm so sorry you chose reachout wireless because the safe link is a good thing and I think Obama's plan was to benefit people. You just can't monitor every single company participating until it's too late.

    • Yes, if they're giving out millions of OUR money, they CAN monitor each company to see that they are doing what they are supposed to be doing, and not giving away anything to anyone who shouldn't get it.

However, as someone who deals with the social issues of people on a daily basis, I can tell you that the scarcity of jobs is real in this present time, and not everyone is as creative as you and I are.:) With that said, go easy on the stereotyping.

      • Fred, I have full knowledge of the scarcity of jobs. Trust me on that one. And yes, there is a LOT of sarcasm in my posts. It's how I make fun of people.

        And, if you'll read the entire thread, (I know, it could take days), you'll see that none of the regulars here are against helping people who need help. We're against helping those able bodied people who have decided to ride on the wagon instead of helping to pull it. And a cellphone is NOT a right.

• Did you folks read the terms and agreements? First strange thing I noticed is that my free phone is probably going to cost me $74.00...hhhhmmmmm. Then a little further on it says that they shall always be held harmless, but they can come after you. One of the instances given was if you lost or destroyed a headset, they state in the terms and conditions that they can come after you for $5,000. So much for a "free phone". I was less than 1/8 through...I decided to quit wasting my time.

    So a person is on welfare, getting food stamps, subsidized housing, and a free cell phone, and they're going to "go after you" for $5,000? Right. Like you're going to pay it when they hand you the bill.

  • You should try to get a free phone. They are very handy. I use mine to schedule my mental health appointments. I am happy to say that I am better able to function in society because of these appointments. Not completely better, but I won't be leeching off the government forever. This would not be possible without this phone.

    Just a note, you probably should have taken the time to notice that most people are complaining that people who are making 50k a year or have the money to pay for their own internet connection, car, home and so forth- are still getting this phone. It's not OK instantly complain about something you have not even read completely.

• Funny how you guys are worried about cellphones and handouts to the poor but no one seems to be upset about the "handouts" our government gave to these car companies that sent all of the jobs to Mexico.

  Where is the outrage in that? Where is the outrage about even the poor undeserving as you claim who pay taxes to support a war that I don't give a rats nest ass about. I am worried about the homeless people with nothing to lose at the gas station, not someone from a sand dune a million miles away. I live in a pretty nice community and my bike was stolen by one of these good "vanilla' people you guys seem to praise. It was not stolen by some illegal who jumped a fence to get here.

  Alert, alert lazy people come in all colors and guess what I live in California and I see all kinds of white people use food stamps, then they leave the organic grocery store and load all their free food in their Volvo. People who can't afford food don't drive Volvo's or a BMW.

  Until the government that you guys love so well come up with some jobs people will be on welfare, food stamps, Wic and anything else free they handing out. Guess what you need a phone if someone is supposed to call you about these imaginary jobs that don't exist.

  I worked for GM for 18 years and got laid off. I already had my BA and finished my Masters and guess what I still could not find a job. I did not sit around watching Jerry Springer waiting on da welfare so I could get me some Newports and a 6 pack of Corona. I am now currently working a job for the state making a whopping $14.77/hr that after paying rent,lights, and insurance leaves very little left over.

  I guess I could go back to school and get my doctorate so I can get a job at Wal-Mart being head cashier, get real. That won't even cover my school books.

  Unlike the car industry and the housing market I actually am paying back my loans. Good Old Uncle Sam did not tie his american flag cape around his neck and save my ass.

  So for all the people with nothing left to do but try and tear down less fortunate people I really would like to see what you do if Jose takes your job because he does not need vacation pay, 401k, Aetna, paid sick leave, and a pension. I know you will find another job right away because you have some kind of magic job sniffing power unlike the rest of us lazy asses.

  Then I wonder if you will say well I worked since I was 16, and I paid taxes.
