Readin’, writin’ and arithmetic go up in smoke in the Obama Justice Department

Looks like Eric Holder’s Justice Department has another racial fiasco on its hands. The Obama administration has decided that competence and qualifications are far less important to a fire department than racial quotas.

Please allow us to restate the problem: Competence and qualifications mean nothing. Race means everything.

When your house is on fire, don't you hope the fireman who shows up got an 'A' on his test?

Big Government has the smokin’ hot story:

Judicial Watch uncovered hundreds of documents from the City of Dayton, Ohio, showing that Department of Justice (DOJ) officials pressured the Dayton Police and Fire Departments to lower testing standards because not enough African-American candidates passed the written exam.

In a rational world, the candidates who didn’t pass would be told to study hard and try again next year. But this isn’t a rational world, it’s an Obamanation:

According to a report by Dayton’s ABC News affiliate on March 11, 2011, the ultimate compromise struck between the City of Dayton and the DOJ resulted in a lowering of test standards for Police Department candidates:

The Dayton Police Department is lowering its testing standards for recruits. It’s a move required by the U.S. Department of Justice after it says not enough African-Americans passed the exam. Dayton is in desperate need of officers to replace dozens of retirees. The hiring process was postponed for months because the D.O.J. rejected the original scores provided by the Dayton Civil Service Board, which administers the test.

Under the previous requirements, candidates had to get a 66% on part one of the exam and a 72% on part two. The D.O.J. approved new scoring policy only requires potential police officers to get a 58% and a 63%. That’s the equivalent of an ‘F’ and a ‘D’.

The equivalent of an ‘F’ and a ‘D’. In other words, the first and last letters of the world F-R-A-U-D.

  • Scary. Theoretically, you could get 50% by guessing, knowing nothing about the subject matter. I would like a cop or fireman to know AT ELAST 3/4 (75%) of the materal taught. Hell, the kids in my state get a D below 75% and and F below 70! Shouldn't our first responders be expected to do as well as a 13 year old?

  • @danybhoy Speaking of teachers who shouldn't be teaching, When I was a Paraprofessional(Teacher's Aide) I worked for a teacher of special needs children 3rd and 4th grade. She was very mean to them. For example she jerked a girl with down syndrome off the floor by her wrist and i swear I heard it pop. Another incident she got very close to one child's face and squeezed his cheeks together so hard it left a hand print around his mouth. Was so glad when my 90 days were up and I transfered to special needs Kindergarten. Some of the most loving kids you'll ever meet. Now that they closed down the school two years ago I've been trying to get back into the education field. But sadly since we cater to illegals and anchor babies it's really difficult.

  • Another example of the liberal hypocrisy. We're here to help you become more helpless, so we can help you some more, so we can feel good about ourselves (oops, I slipped up - the last phrase should be redacted!).

  • Having been a cop in the peoples republic of Kalifornia for 20 years, I have seen it all. When I started you had to go thru a long process, some cities trying to meet quotas lowered their standards and all of a sudden we get crooked cops and firemen with a liking for kiddie porn. Lowering the standards puts everyone at risk. You only want the best to respond to your emergency, not some guy orgal that is not sure which end of the gun a bullet comes out of. It's hard enough to watch your own backside when dealing with criminals, let alone having to worry about a rookie cop who finished last in his academy class. Like a previous blogger said, STUDY and RE-take the test. If you fail it ten times it might be that you were never suppose to be in this business in the first place.

BY the way Love this website!!! first place I go every morning...

    • I am a retired Policeman from the L.A. area. In 1972, when I tested, it took 8 months of tests, plus there was a minimum height/weight standard. Everyone had to do the same tests. Now....? Even a midget can get hired. No joke.. Standards have been comprimised to accomodate.

    • Tell your friends about IHTM. Tell you enemies. Tell complete strangers.

In what part of California do you work?

      • Your gonna love this, Stockton, the 10th most dangerous city in America, where by the way the idiots that run the city have laid over over 100 cops in the last year....and we just had our 6th murder in 8 days....

I told everyone I know about your website. I absolutely love it.

And contrary to popular belief I an not a union goon, Belive it not most cops are very conservative and it's their union leaders who tend to bend over and kiss liberal butt while waiting for a handout...

        • Damn, it doesn't seem that long ago that Stockton was a nice city. Ihad a cousin who lived there. What the hell happened?

          • Hey. Editor...
Did you know Stockton has forbid any fire fighter or police officer to attempt any life saving treatments? The city sold those rights to an ambulance company. The private company now bills for what first responders did for free! Stockton City Manager has threatend to terminate anyone messing around trying to save a life. Sad state of affairs, huh?

          • Stockton was making progress till the economy went south. County unemployment is around 20 percent, the housing market went south and Stockton became ground zero for the housing crisis. Then we had several city administrations that built a new arena (NO acts just a minor league hockey team) A new ballpark (Looses money) a new marina (looses money) and they also bought a bank building as the new city hall. (They can't get tennants) We have always been a dumping ground for people on parole, add to that a drop out rate in the schools that at around 50 percent, and if you a decent hard working citizen, you have a one in 63 chance of becoming a violent crime victim. Right now we are looking at a 20 plus percent pay cut because they have to keep the arena, marina, ballpark, a theater and the new city hall going. All the current city council members are liberals with an agenda, the brought in a city manager who hates cops and firemen and we have had over 30 million dollars taken from the police department in three years. Theres no way in hell we can keep up with thye crime. and the criminals know it. I have seen calls hanging for ten plus hours till we could get someone there (non-emergency calls) It's a mess . Prior to that crime was dropping, and people actually felt safe..Not anymore. It's like being in prison for decent folks in bad neighborhoods, especially the old folks... Makes me wanna scream.

    • It absolutely destroys trust. If you cannot depend upon your partner, and you cannot even *say*: "I don't want to patrol with *him*, because he doesn't know what the heck he's doing", you are going to have a very hard time going to work at a job that demands teamwork and trust.

Just more of the unintended consequences of bad legislation, the answer to which, I am sure, will be more bad legislation.

  • I had a couple people tell me they will only go to a white doctor because, due to craziness that is affirmative action in its various guises, they can't be sure if a non-white doctor is as qualified as a white doctor -- and it's the government's fault.

    • Sad. It is so because COMPETENT Doctors of color will not get as many patients as they should or given a chance to prove their competence. This is the government's fault. They are creating or institutionalizing racism. It is evil.

      • I don't know -- I think that people may be going overboard with their reactions to doctors.

It takes a lot of training, even for the incompetent, and anyone not dedicated to the medical profession would eventually leave for easier money. I've had good, bad, and otherwise doctors regardless of skin color -- my health depends not upon how the doctor acts at one visit, but my relationship with the doctor as a whole, over time. A bad, equal opportunity doctor will not last long before his patients leave. Then again, I never blindly trust what my doctor says, and in serious cases, would make sure to get a second opinion.

Now, there are positions where I might not be so willing to take a chance -- for example, as a first responder like a fireman, but everybody *knows* that no one is *stupid* enough to water that qualification down, right? It would take an epic imbecile to open positions like that to incompetent people as a sop to a cultural fad.

        [crickets]

  • This is sad really. The unintended consequence is that policies like this create a negative image of black people that have legitimately earned and deserve their positions. ie, I know a woman that refused to have her grand daughter treated by a black doctor in an emergency room. When telling me the story she stated, "How do I know he is not just some quota filler that really doesnt know what he is doing?" Personally I would have given the Dr. the benefit of the doubt and wonder about the embarrassment that Dr. must have felt.
On the other hand, if crap like this Dayton story and many like it didnt exist, this concern about blacks in these kind of roles would soon go away. I dont believe that in 2011, the Dayton, Ohio fire department would say, "Gee, this guy scored high on his test, BUT he's black."
Some years ago, probably so, but I would hope we are past that. (Despite the idiot POTUS and media pukes (two redundancies) dragging the country backwards in race relations) I doubt that special considerations need to be made for Asians.
    Again IMO, unintended consequences.

  • "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be."
    - Thomas Jefferson
Need to find the source for this quote, may be an interesting read.

  • Maybe the city has the right idea. I've always thought it took more balls than brains to intentionally run into a burning building or yell "Freeze MF" to some doped up crack head with a gun. Them boys are to be admired.

    • I get kind of nervous though, when I think of the prospect of being pulled over by an officer who got a 58 and a 63.

  • It's time to scrap the Dept. of Education, & go with school vouchers.

The more money we spend, the dumber they come out, & the money seems to be going to teachers who maybe should'nt be teaching. The fact that only 1 of the 3 R's actually starts with an R is just 1 problem. But we don't even teach them really, but all the kids have great self esteem & know about the bullsh!t that is "global warming". The kids can tell you about wind & solar power, & why oil & coal are bad, but will not understand why they will be answering to China & India when they are older.

Again, it's time time to cut off what has become "Big Education" & get back to actually educating the kids.

    • You're right Dany,
The more money we throw at education only seems to guarantee worse results and poor decision making from the schools. The school board where I live voted to allow ipods and cell phones in school saying that the kids could only use them during designated times and places. Yeah right, you can guess how that worked out. I had to call the high school and have them take my daughter's cell phone from her because she was continuously texting me from her class! ( her mother and I took her cell and she didn't get it back until the end of the year and guess what? Not only did she survive, her grades improved! LOL)
