Remember the rock group Simply Red? Yeah, the cheesy 80s band with the singularly unattractive, red-headed lead singer.
Well, Mick Hucknall, that lead singer, is now apologizing to the three thousand women he slept with over a three-year period.
Yeah, sure, Mick. Whatever you say.
The Guardian UK has the story:
“A red-headed man,” Mick Hucknall modestly acknowledges, “is not generally considered to be a sexual icon,” although that did not stop the singer from using his own curly red locks to remarkable seductive effect at the height of his fame in the mid- 80s, when he estimates he slept with more than 3,000 women in three years.
Today, however, pop’s unlikeliest Lothario has offered a startling apology, describing his behaviour as an addiction. “I regret the philandering,” he says in an interview for this newspaper’s film and music section. “In fact, can I issue a public apology through the Guardian? They know who they are, and I’m truly sorry.”
Now first of all, we consider this to be right up there with Wilt Chamberlain claiming to have slept with 20,000 women. But at least Chamberlain’s claim was a bit more believable because was an athlete and his claim was spread over a period of decades.
But we love the fact that the Guardian UK added this correction at the bottom of the story:
This article was amended on 3 December 2010. Owing to an editing error, the original headline read: Mick Hucknall apologies to 1,000 women he slept with. This, and the related story text, has been corrected.
Three thousand? One thousand? It really doesn’t matter. If your music had been half as creative as this story, Mick, you’d still be a star.

Amazing he could find 3000 blind women in that span of time.
You know I was going to try to get some comment in regarding Holding Back The Years...but it would seem awkward at best.
Awkward is such a self-descriptive word, what with the wkw sequence in it.
I only just learned what the lyrics are since this thread. Nice rhyming. Interesting use of old informal English and modern formal English words - 'pater' and 'mater'. I never even tried to understand the words before. Total mush ball poetry, without too much imagination. Sung in that interesting pitch, sounding rather feminine with a little gravel. Very sappy and pretty ballad. The use of an odd number of stanzas with the altered lyric tempo is clever, that being the three lines leading to the first (abbreviated) bridge. I shall not apologize for my tastes in music nor my take on this simply lame example of silly songs.
... And a Merry Christmas to everyone!
Rock star?! I know NOTHING about this individual... what did he sing that was so great?
Holding Back the Years. It was a very pretty song. Rock ballad? No. Nothing rocked in that song, but I admit having liked it. Also, he sounds like a girl.
I just listened to the song for the first time in at least 20 years. It sounds like they decided to avoid directly plagiarizing a Carole King song, the title of which I cannot recall at this time. Probably from her "Tapestry" LP.
I'll admit that I still find it to be quite a pretty song.
Nah... thanks for letting me know, but doesn't ring a bell will have to look it up, but the man is not hot... sorry but he ain't so these women were desperate or just covetous.
The song I have mentioned here is really a great song, for a purdy ballad kinda top 40 hit, but don't watch the video while assessing it. Seeing this clown takes huge points away from it!
I'm thinking that all the girls he had sex with had the last name of .jpg, and he met them while singlehandedly surfing the internet.
Seriously, he's so ugly he couldn't get laid in a bordello with a thousand dollar bill taped to his forehead. He makes bowling shoes look sexy.
Dammit perlcat, you are one of the funniest people! I'm gonna ask that you must reconsider this since it was more likely the .gif family slags were more prolific in that era. The Joint photographic experts weren't really, ummm... spreading at this time. They only got there, um... feet wet right about the time Mick and the band were topping the pops!
The only song by this band I can recognize was that pretty ballad (and hardly a rock song) "Holding Back the Years". I actually liked that song when I first heard it. I admit to think she had a very interesting voice and the song was kind of a heart mover. Then I found out it was a dude singer, figgered he was not quite straightly oriented for one reason or another. I honestly do not recall another song from this band.
Now he's apologizing for 1 groupie violation a night for the run of their popularity. Ritchie Blackmore's record still holds...
Well, I gave serious thought to calling him a devotee of ASCII art, but those only bring back bad memories of trying to stand waaaaay back so that the image could be recognized.
Correction: Three per night for the run of their popularity. And that doesn't factor in any sick days.
I was using his amended number of 1,000 rather than his drug addled brain fail of 3,000. Sick days? They are all sick days when they have to use daily sinus douche in order for the cocaine to have any affect. So about 3 years, about a thousand whacked out coke whores, give or take. He shoulda kept a scrap book or something. There were probably occasions where more than 1 slag chose to let it happen at the same time.
The music biz is now and always has had a sleaze bag element to it. The 70s was the decade of total backstage sexual indiscretion. The only thing that prevented the 80s from being worse was the introduction of AIDS. Well, the hair styles may have played a part in it, as well.
Actually, I really find this hard to believe.
I remember the video for "red, red wine" well, and this guy looked really REPULSIVE. Check it out. After I saw that particular video, I HATED the song and the band.
I guess there are that many females (males?) who would sleep with him out there, but I doubt THEY are bragging on it. Rather embarrassing since he is SO ugly....I think in the dictionary the definition for "coyote ugly", there's his pic! No kidding.
Red Red Wine was done by UB40...not a fan of the song OR the band either.
You are correct. My error for not reseaching more, and this guy does resemble the singer in THAT video.
At least we agree on the band and THAT song.
BUT, I still stand by my comment that this guy is VERY ugly and it is hard to believe that many women would sleep with him!
Thanks for the info (and being gracious about correcting me) :)
He got women with that goofy awful haircut? Maybe those 3,000 women were looking at his wallet.
Janeane Garofalo, Rosie O'Donnell, Barbara Streisand, Helen Thomas, Hillary Clinton, Whoopi Goldberg, Sandra Bernhard, Wanda Sykes, ...
Is that a partial list?
I wonder if he was, holding back the tears when he was bragging, er, confessing. This was just a ploy by an irrelevant, faded pop star to get back into the news and use his alleged conquests as bona fides to those who would care. I'll bet the 4 gals he actually slept with have faces that are simply red.
NOW he has an addiction. I'm sure he REALLY regrets having sex with all those women. No, what he regrets is the hideous diseases he got from at least one of them. I get sick of people who lived like a rock star- Sex, booze, & drugs, then they quit, and thus try and tell me that they had too much fun, so I shouldn't. I hope your penis falls off, Mick. I also hope you fathered 150 kids, and they take every royalty check you ever get. Plus, your music sucks.
I get sick of people who lived like a rock star- Sex, booze, & drugs, then they quit, and thus try and tell me that they had too much fun, so I shouldn’t.
Usually in such cases, (I don't know about this particular one) it's someone telling you that shallow pursuits aren't all they're cracked up to be, and that soulless "fun" is actually destructive. It's not a case of "I had fun, but you shouldn't."
What I'm tired of is people who are told "Don't be a hedonist" and laugh off the warning with one of two responses: 1.) "You've never indulged in it, so you can't judge!" 2.) "You used to indulge in it, so you're a hypocrite!"
Well, a guy's either done it or he hasn't. If the hedonist has a strategy for laughing off the warnings no matter where they come from, then there's no hope.
Think one of his conquests was Susan Boyle?
What, you don't like Susan Boyle?
