Let’s hear it for the rooster. A California man has died after being stabbed in the leg by a sharp blade attached to a fighting cock.
The New York Post reports the poetic justice:
Jose Luis Ochoa, 35, was taken to a local hospital shortly after police responded to a reported cockfight last Sunday in Lamont, Calif., a town nine miles south-southeast of Bakersfield.
An autopsy revealed Wednesday that Ochoa’s death was accidental and caused by an injury to his right calf.
“I have never seen this type of incident,” Sgt. Martin King, a 24-year veteran, told the paper. But he noted that it was not surprising that Ochoa died since one of his major arteries had likely been severed. “People have been known to bleed out from those injuries if medical attention is not obtained immediately.”
You’re among friends. Admit it. Don’t you kind of enjoy stories like this? Doesn’t it give you a certain sense of satisfaction hearing that someone who would pay to see such a barbaric sport ends up the victim of that sport? And along a similar vein, don’t you always hope the bull wins the bull fight?

I have to admit I was curled up with my dog enjoying one of life's best moments when I read the story, it reminded me of Michel Vick and I got pissed.

OK, let me get this straight. Someone partakes in an admittedly stupid, cruel and juvenile practice. . . so you folks think it's worthy of the death penalty?
For all we know this was the guy's only vice, odds are good that claimed to be a Christian like so many here, he may have left a widow and orphans, he certainly was some one's son.
Sorry, as you know we agree about a great many things, but I just don't see these responses as any less stupid, cruel and juvenile than the cockfighting.
I am a Christian and I am a person with common sense who also has a healthy respect for nature. Like someone above said if you are going to eat the animal that is one thing, the animal is there and the animal is edible. When you are using animals for food unless you are an evil freak you treat the animal with respect (feed them keep them healthy) until the day that you are ready to sacrifice in order to eat or sell for others to eat.
However terrorizing the animal and using the animal for profit and gain, OBVIOUSLY keeping the animal in very unhealthy and inhumane conditions in order to keep the animal angry and ready to fight at the drop of a hat is disgusting and vile. It is not juvenile and it is not stupid it is evil. Serial killers before they were such tend to treat animals like this. Seriously? a murder may have only one vice: murder, but because he is a "good" Father, and a "good" husband and goes to church on Sundays and tithes is a "good" employee or employer I'm supposed to be okay with the fact that he is killing me or a member of my family? or a friend or any innocent person? I don't think so.
Now he didn't get any capital punishment from any court of law. The punishment came from the universe and as a consequence of HIS OWN actions. Since he chose to live in this way it is indeed apt that he died at the well... talon of the way he chose to live... mistreating animals for sick pleasure and in my opinion ill gains. As a Christian you better believe I believe in retribution and this is what it was. NO one here at a hand in it, the universe if you will had the hand in it, we are just stating that we find how the universe dealt with it to be appropriate and considering the many ways in which things happen that seem unfair, I am not going to deny myself the delight... yes delight in seeing some degree of justice being meted here... just like a terrorist dying at the explosion of ones of his bombs.
Whatever his vices, he did'nt have the brains to get to the hospital after having a serious injury. So cockfighting was'nt his only vice, piss poor judgement was as well, & maybe gambling.
BTW, I always root for the animals in cases like...Roosters vs. idiots at cockfights...

I am smart enough to see who is really the victim in these types of stories, & in this case, it was the rooster. The rooster will probably have to be put down as well. I respect life, but I also have no problem with laughing at someone like Ochoa, who seemed to little regard for animals tourtured for sport for the purposes of gambling, meeting his fate like this. The man made choices, & was very unlucky. Some might say karma's a bitch, but whatever it was, it was funny.

I hunt deer, but here the thing, I kill the deer, I don't terrorize it to death, I have respect for the game.

However, it seems to me, that the National Perspective is a little out of whack. Maybe, it says something about our times. Judging by the Vick case and this Chicken thing,

Plus, I've never had to listen to as many Violent Threats and racist jabber about a crime committed, than the Vick case. To me, much worse Stuff IS and HAS happened around the world, to worry about this BS for more than a week. But here we are, how many years later?
ps. I should note, I have been breeding American Bulldogs for almost 20 years and currently own 6 Dogs.
A dog breed that is one of many being banned, mass euthanized and also fought, due to the sensational media and and sentimental dog owners.
But don't forget the number one reason pits are being banned and euthanized. Irresponsible dog owners who chose the breed so they themsselves can look/be tough. Too bad we can't euthanize THEM.
Yeah but Barb, the Media and ASPCA needs to be responsible, too.
For example. The ASPCA wanted to make a Big story about a cruel owner who would lock his dog into a Sky Kennel, and poke at it with a broomstick. The Media and ASPCA then, in News article after news article, explained that this cruelty of poking the dog was teaching the dog to fight.
Another practice, that has had the same success for the ASPCA, is called 'trunking'. The practice of throwing 2 dogs into the trunk of a car to fight it out.
These things never existed before, or were isolated incidents.
Now, every 6 months, I get a telephone call from some ghetto kid looking to buy dogs, talking about 'trunking',
and every kook with a 'Pitbull' pokes at them with a broomsticks in a sky kennel.
I can Guarantee, these Practices are not doing anything for the fighting spirit of the dog. I am sure no knowledgeable dog person has ever recommended poking or 'trunking' a dog.
No, it was the ASPCA who recommended it.
The outcome is, the ASPCA now has a Generation of 'Pokers' and 'Trunkers' across the Globe. Self Fulfilling prophecy, I would say.

I get a lot more than just sadistic pleasure out of hearing stories like this. My wife and I've raised chickens and other farm poultry and we love them. Chickens are great bug chasers and weed eaters. Couldn't happen to a nicer cock fighter.
