It’s a mandate: South Dakota to require all residents to own a gun?
Thanks for five creative legislators in South Dakota, Democrats are about to learn the meaning of the phrase “hoisted on your own petard.”
The Argus Leader has the particulars of the petard:
Five South Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require any adult 21 or older to buy a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.”
Barney Frank has come out against the individual mandate since he learned that it includes neither a man nor a date
The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm.Nor does the measure specify what type of firearm. Instead, residents would pick one “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and preference.The measure is known as an act “to provide for an individual mandate to adult citizens to provide for the self defense of themselves and others.”
Rep. Hal Wick, R-Sioux Falls, is sponsoring the bill and knows it will be killed. But he said he is introducing it to prove a point that the federal health care reform mandate passed last year is unconstitutional.
“Do I or the other cosponsors believe that the State of South Dakota can require citizens to buy firearms? Of course not. But at the same time, we do not believe the federal government can order every citizen to buy health insurance,” he said.
Can’t wait to hear this one argued before the Supreme Court. Or even the People’s Court.
If the gubmint can make us buy health insurance, why can't they make us buy safety equipment?
I would say "Don't give 'em any ideas" but they already do that.
South Dakota is a great state, & it does'nt come with much of the BS many of the other states do. It's a no nonsense sort of place for the most part. At least that is how it came across to me when I visited there a few years back.
Is this a state or federal bill? If ot is state only it could be legal.
Learn to read english Diego then check out the article again. It is a bil to be introduced to the House of Representatives. You know, like in Washington, D.C.? Where all our elected elite tend to congregate to pass laws that are, for the most part, neither approved of nor needed by the American citizen?

Bawney Fwank aside, what's the average cost of living in South Dakota? I feel like moving there! Too bad it's just a gimmick to upstage another gimmick.

As for this legislation it makes a great point. It seems kind of like a waste of time and paper, but I think it makes a great point, but we are talking liberals they don't well with good points, they don't know what to do with them.
