The Greatest President In History was out there inspiring Democrats prior to the ObamaCare vote by saying:
“I’ve been in your shoes. I know what it’s like to take a tough vote. But what did Lincoln say? ‘I am not bound to win, but I’m bound to be true.’”
Two things about this.
One, when did Barack Obama ever take a tough vote? Instead of leading in the Illinois Senate, he consistently voted “Present”. Two, the quote he attributes to Lincoln probably wasn’t said by Lincoln.
The clip above is an edited version of Obama’s complete comment, which was, “I have the great pleasure of having a really nice library at the White House. And I was tooling through some of the writings of some previous Presidents and I came upon this quote by Abraham Lincoln: ‘I am not bound to win, but I’m bound to be true. I’m not bound to succeed, but I’m bound to live up to what light I have.’”
As John J. Pitney, Jr. noted in National Review’s The Corner, “The book he was consulting may have been They Never Said It, by Paul F. Boller and John George. If so, he missed what they said about the Lincoln passage: ‘This sounds like Honest Abe, but honesty compels admirers of Lincoln to admit that there is no documentary evidence for the statement.’”
It’s only fitting, wouldn’t you agree, that Barack Obama inspires phony confidence with a phony quote.
