This isn’t the kind of story we usually run, but we couldn’t resist.
San Luis Obispo, California is the intergalactic headquarters of IHateTheMedia.com. It has also been named Happiest Place In America. We think those two facts are unrelated, but we wouldn’t swear to it in court.
Everything they say in this video is true, but understated. We think our town is not just the best town in the United States, but in the world.
IHateTheMedia.com’s Editor and Administrator met in San Luis Obispo. They moved their families here to get away from the horror that Southern California had become.
We both visited SLO Town many times before making our big moves. We talked to everyone we met and noticed that they all sounded as if they worked for the Chamber of Commerce. The more we visited, the more we understood why.
It’s interesting that Dominique Dawes interviewed the owner of Big Sky Café for this story, because that’s the first place The Editor and Mrs. Editor ate the first time they visited San Luis Obispo. Not a bad place to start.
Just one thing: As much as we enjoyed this video, it would have been improved immeasurably if Dominique Dawes had done it while wearing her little gymnastic leotards. Hubba hubba, Dominique.

But... dude, it's CALIFORNIA. Doesn't that trump everything else?
I would never move to a city that banned drive-thrus!
Looks great! But with City Sales and Use Tax: 8.75%
Property Tax Rate: 1.1% of taxable value
Corporate Income Tax: 8.84%
Personal Income Tax: 9.3%
Seems like a pretty expensive place to live.
Hey I'm in Pasadena CA (Los Angeles County) and it SUCKS.
Just make sure you're ready for the big hikes that are coming to cover the HUGE DEBT California has created.
Death threats; Odd how they come mainly from the religion of peace and compassionate liberals.
Liberals remind me of my child! If she desn't get her way she act out, by stomping, yelling or throwing things. You can't convince her because she is 12yrs old and thinks she knows everything! Of course she whines later and tries to blame me when I end up being right!
Question: why stay in CA? I take it you're retired or something similar. Why not move to another state to starve the beast?
Too much family here. And it's so effin gorgeous. I have to be by the ocean too.
That's why I'm in San Diego. Can't get too far from the beach. Otherwise, I'd be out of CA in a heartbeat. And having been to SLO a few times, I do plan on returning. It's beautiful.
I lived there, from Del Mar to Carlsbad, until 1997, leaving just before the North Coast became just a big freeway. North County Coastal was a great place. Still a cool area though, the best "big city" there is.
Death threats = leave it to the libtards to actually do what they accuse conservatives of doing.
One of the things that makes me happy - going through the drive-through for a cheeseburger and fries. But wait a minute! That does not fit the definition of "happiness" in SLO. So it's true - where you live really does matter!
No place is perfect, but they just opened an In 'N Out Burger next door in Arroyo Grande.
Wait a second, I just watched the entire video, SBO regulates that size of street signs and bans drive-thrus. It appears anything not approved is forbidden, and I thought Madison was bad. Please, spare me mandated happiness, get out of California and save your soul
You have it backwards - it's the unhappiness that's mandated.
Are you serious, do you really get death threats ?I'm a certified weapons instructor, I hope you have taken the appropriate steps to defend yourself.
Looks like a beautiful place to live. Congratulations.
Oh yeah, I'm ready. But I'd prefer to just use my hands, which are quite deadly as well. ;)
Editor: Ditto your comments on Big Sky Café. You can find me once or twice a week eating at the bar. (To those who write and threaten my life and limb, here's your chance. Make my day, please.)
Big Sky is new since I left. Where is it? Is TOH still out Foothill, near Los Osos Valley Road? What the heck was the name of that coffee shop, in the hotel, if you drove down Grand, to Monterey, then turned left, a few hundred feet?? Yeah "The Ark", is that still there? Then, of course the surplus store has been long gone, from where Higuera makes the turn away from 101. KZOZ was there for a while! Across the parking place was a Mountain MIke's pizzeria.
Then on the other end of Foothill, near the campus, across the street (HIway 1) from (What we called "The Woodpile" a ghastly big set of redwood colored apartments) is the Williams Brother market still alive?Ahhh Such wonderful memories. I do NOT argue SLO is the happiest place on earth!
You must have been here a long time ago, as I don't recognize any of the names you mentioned. I've been here just since '97.
Oh my goodness! My roommate used to work at an all night 7-11 type market in Moron Bay. I would get off KVEC at midnight, and walk out there! (Long hike!) Then before they populated the NW corner of the CPSLO campus, I would walk out Poly Grove, to the Architects place, and on up the hill to the SP tracks. Then down the tracks by the Men's colony and back into SLO. My favorite was at the far end, there were springs with water! Once in a while, I would go up from the springs, to Channel 6 on Cuesta. (another lonnnng way!)
Ahhhhh..... The trips down Amnesia Lane.....
Oops, It's not "Poly Grove", it's "Poly Canyon".
I'm not surprised you get death threats, liberals have no sense of humor and always appear angry and intolerant. I live in Madison, WI where expressing conservative opinions can also generate death threats, boycotts and moonbat barking.
BTW: Madison is also a nice place to live, it's SLO with frigid winters.
That's a very strange coincidence - my last threat came from Madison.
Frigid winters? Out here 60 degrees is considered a bitterly cold winter day. We break out the parkas and hot apple cider.
...my last threat came from Madison."
Sigh...I promise it wasn't me, but I'm not surprised it came from Mad City. Madison is the home of the University of Wisconsin and is considered the Berkeley of the Midwest. The place is infested with moonbats, anarchists, communists, man-hating feminists and eco-crazies. But there are a lot of good people there too, and I've learned how to deal with the crackpots...usually with a polo mallet.
at least we did something right in wisconsin got rid of feingold
wow administrator! we have something in common. i went to cal poly for a year, before transferring to the SF art institute. proudly, i am not one of those who threatens your life... although i'm not surprised it happens.
Great town isn't it?
