Who was the big Democrat donor who was being wooed by the hot Russian spy?

Rumors are swirling around Washington and New York about the identity of the mysterious Democrat “whale” who was seduced by Anna Chapman, the hot Russian spy.

Here’s one possibility gleaned from a story in the Denver Post on January 30, 2009 about billionaire Ron Perelman and ex-wife Ellen Barkin:

Barkin, 54, pocketed $60 million from Perelman, 66, who slapped her with divorce papers in 2006, then booted her from his East 63rd Street mansion. But she quickly struck back. The “Sea of Love” actress auctioned off more than 100 jewels he’d lavished on her, netting an additional $20.3 million.

And when she bumped into Perelman at the Waverly Inn with new girlfriend Anna Chapman, Barkin threw a glass of water in his face and hissed at Chapman: “I feel sorry for you that you have to (bleep) him tonight.”

Well, Perelman definitely qualifies as a big Democrat donor and this story links him to an Anna Chapman. But if this was the Russian spy, what kind of secret information did she expect to get out of the leveraged buy-out king? His PIN number?

Is this the same Anna Chapman? Probably not. But as graduates of the MSNBC school of journalism, we thought there was no reason to let facts get in the way of a good story.
