99 texting acronyms you (and every other parent) should know

texting

Texting, instant messaging and chat rooms use a strange, new language that’s filled with abbreviations and acronyms designed to quickly communicate and easily disguise a myriad of sex and drug terminology. It’s beyond the comprehension of most adults.

Some of the abbreviations and acronyms have been created so that kids can continue their conversation with friends while a parent is watching over their shoulder, confident the old folks are clueless. For example, if you saw your daughter sending the text message, “PAW GYPO & Ill GNOC later” would you know she just scheduled a time for a naked video camera session after you go to bed for the night? And what’s more frightening than not knowing when your 13-year old keyed LMIRL in a chat room, it meant “Let’s meet in real life?”

So here you go. Here’s the Rosetta Stone of texting/chatting/emailing. A comprehensive guide to acronyms, abbreviations, phrases and lingo to look for on your kid’s phone or computer. Some are outright disgusting and we hope you never see your kids use them. Others are harmless on their own but still important to know in context.

If you feel guilty taking a peek at your little darling’s computer and phone, remember one thing: You paid for them.

LOLTWOM (Laughing out loud, they won’t outsmart me).

Warning: many of these terms are offensive

  • 95% of these abbreviations have never met my eyes to be honest. And anyone I know and that I have texted throughout my teen years have honestly never texted me most of these on the list. I'm 19 so I know what I'm talking about, and I am being honest. I bet if any of you parents stole you kids phone while they were sleeping only 1% would probably have some of this idiocy on there. XD who we should be worrying about should be the person who made the list. O.o

  • kitty? lhso? what tha fuck! who would post this! what if you have a 6-10 yr old child next to you!? they might read these! oh my god ppl!

  • Oh. my.... I can't even... where do I start? Ok, I seriously am about to throw up. I am a teen myself and I type like a normal human. Nobody knows these abbreviations, I only know like.. three. I don't even use "lol". Who made this list? Probably a PARENT. If your kid is memorizing this list they have serious problems.

  • I mean i would totally use those but like the first commment said there not popular

    • I mean I would totally use those, but like the first comment said, they're not popular.

Apparently, punctuation and spelling aren't popular either. It's ok, I fixed it for you.

  • David,David,David, juvenile little rants like yours on a page from '09 say more about you than you think and leave me shaking my head. Nice to see your parents have that letting you make your own mistakes thing down cold but it only works if you realize you're being an ass. Here's a tip from a parent for you technologically challenged yutes, bookmark Urban Dictionary. Quickly.

    • Lots of parents from earlier generations reference urban dictionary oblivious to how inaccurate it is. Urban Dictionary, much like wikipedia (and in ways more open than wikipedia) can be edited and updated by anyone. Take my favorite pastime, bowling, for example. You can search the word "bowling" on urban dictionary and one of the first definitions for it is masturbating. Jerking off. Now I've never heard it used for that purpose or context. Does that mean it's never been used before? Hell no. But it means that it's not used commonly enough for parents to be concerned about it. Telling someone to bookmark something as changeable and unreliable as urban dictionary is really a shot at your own intelligence and knowledge of the current world. If you think parents are doing right raising their kids by spying on them and attempting to catch them using "codes", well that's just like, your opinion man.

      • UD isn't as open as Wikipedia. At UD you have to submit a word or definition for approval by admin. I know, I've had a submission turned down. Wikipedia allows you to add text directly to the page.

        • Yeah man, but new shit has come to light! The bottom line is, parents spying on their kids is not cool. So many people take measures to catch their kids in the act instead of raising them right in the first place. The point of articles like this is relevancy, yes? This article is not relevant to any teen culture. Look at the teens posting comments. It's another classic case of paranoid parents finding shit to blame on someone else instead of taking responsibility for their own shoddy parenting. If you're gonna do that, you might as well sue companies like Verizon and AT&T for providing the service that enables the kids to communicate via text message which gives them freedom to use acronyms such as these. I'd recommend an anonymous poll of teens to see how many of the youths of today even know what these are before posting a bandwagon article that increases the tension between modern parents and teenagers even more. I love my kids, (damn I had to break out of character), and part of loving your kids is trust. Sure it's hard to trust your teens at times when you're a parent, but if you're confident at all in how you raised them, it's no problem at all. Part of loving someone is giving them the benefit of the doubt. If you assume the worst in people, especially your kids, it makes for a crummy life for you and them. I raised my daughter and son as a single dad. I trusted them, I made sure they knew that I trusted them to make smart decisions. I raised them to have faith in themselves, each other, and humanity as a whole. I raised them to care for the earth, to care for others, and to take responsibility for what they do. Not once did I have to interfere with their choices or "protect" them, because I raised them to be good kids. Sure, they got into trouble a few times, but it gave them experiences to learn from and opportunities help others with what they found. My kids would not have had that if I was constantly meddling with their personal lives. They would have had shallow doctrines implanted in their brains with no personal life story to reference for when real problems surfaced. If you think my parenting methods were weak and that I needed to strengthen my grip on my kids, I give you this: My son is now one of the most respected Medical Technicians in Eastern Africa and my daughter is an acclaimed Eco-Architect in Seattle. My parents raised me much like the author of this article would raise their kids, and I can honestly say I was too afraid to take risks and make mistakes because I was under my parents' thumb. They had me convinced that I was a bad kid. I was suspected of doing things just because teens on tv with shitty parents were doing it. I ended up dropping out of college and falling into a second-rate career. My kids grew up to be awesome, because I raised them to know that no matter what they did, they were good kids. So go ahead and monitor your kids. See what that gets you.

          • If folks like you took the time to listen to others and tried to keep an open mind, the world would be a better place. Are you saying you've changed for the better since 5 years ago? If not, don't you have some heli-parenting to do? (On a side note, this article was recently shared by a few sites I visit regularly. I saw it recently, I responded. Is there a problem?)

          • Yes, there is a problem... you're an a$$hole. Anything else? This thread is so old and so trite but you're being a sanctimonious Richard. Go play at huffpo or Reddit, I'm sure they'll appreciate you.

          • Yea it is, but written in the style of a true libturd.... Every time I see his posts, I keep hearing an Aerosmith song..."Dude looks like a lady".....Or in texting abreveations...DLLAL

          • And I have your dipshit right here polka boy... I am so sick of you hit and run posters that don't have a clue or anything worthwhile to contribute. Like I said, bring it you f**king pussy, put up or shut up.

          • Yea dude is smart guy, he done know everything, dats why dey call him dude, he got no name...Dude be impotant to everyone..he be a legend in his own mind...

          • Yes sir, his Massengilness. Of course Sir, there is a vinegar flush for that...let's play the game if you'd like... doom on you. Bring it.

          • Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "a punk". I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or His Dudeness, or Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

  • Frankly, this page is ridiculous. I stumbled upon it while searching for what the text acronym, "smh" stands for. Im 19 years old, so that should say something about how legitimate the codes and acronyms posted here are. I was looking up what a letter acronym might mean, obviously kids aren't familiar with these codes if a kid like me that texts a lot doesnt even know a REAL one like "smh". And in all my years of texting, starting in my freshman year of high school, I've never seen any of these codes above used. Not to add insult to injury, but I think any kid stupid enough to actually use these codes instead of finding more covert means of telling their friend they want to buy extacy for example, wouldn't be smart enough to learn them in the first place. Kids typically talk in nearly perfect grammar when texting I've found. The only times I even break perfect grammar are when I'm either legitimately unknowing of the proper form in which to type what I'm trying to say, or to use a slang term like "gonna" instead of "going to" to keep conversation more fluent and flowing like a real conversation does. This page is typical nonsensical bullshit put out there to scare parents into keeping a closer eye on their kids. Which, frankly is completely counter-intuitive. If you want your kid to be good, you need to set a good example and show them that they can trust you. Let them make mistakes and grow up on their own. Its a parents job to guide their kids not overburden them. /end rant. <-- theres some troll speak for you. Have fun spending 2 minutes googling wtf these last two sentences mean and probably getting it all wrong because of sites like this ^_^.

    • Probably a lot easier to type out words on your modern phone, then for 19 year-olds 10 years ago. I don't blame them for coming up with shortcuts when you had to hold down a numeric key to get to the next letter, or hit "7" three times to get an "R". But then again, when I had a girl's number, and I wanted to chat her up, I'd just call her.

But yeah, today, thank the wizards behind Swype

  • Lol....WHAT?

This list is as stated above, UNREALISTIC.
    NO ONE uses that.
    FB? REALLY? FACEBOOK DAMN YOU!
