Maybe there’s just no need to actually learn what the Constitution says when you’re going to ignore it anyway. That’s the only explanation we can think of to explain Democrat Dick Durbin’s comment in a congressional hearing Tuesday.
Thinking wistfully of the DREAM Act, he said that a young person who’s an illegal alien today could someday become president.
CNS News has the quote:
“When I look around this room, I see America’s future, our doctors, our teachers, our nurses, our engineers, our scientists, our soldiers, our congressmen, our senators, and maybe our president,” Durbin said immediately after having asked all young persons in the room to stand if they were currently undocumented aliens who would be eligible to become citizens if the DREAM Act were passed.
Dick, buddy, the Constitution expressly prohibits aliens from becoming president. Except for the clause that says Barack Obama is an exception to the rule.

I started to share this on my Facebook page and realized two things:
1) The people who need to read it the most won't because they have no clue who Dick Durbin is.
2) Even if they did read it, they wouldn't understand why it's a big deal.
Our country is in serious serious trouble. Rest assured, this WILL end up as part of my American Government class this week. Hopefully I can take my 41 students and educate at least 20 of them on the issue.

It makes perfect sense to Dick the Dick Durbin when you emote the way he does; since the Constitution and the Bill of Rights don't matter, neither does common sense, in other words, if I feel it so, then it is so...works for me!

If you're in Downstate Illinois calling someone a Durbin is another way of calling them a pompous douchebag with an overexaggerated sense of importence. If you don't live here, you can use it too. We don't mind.
My understanding is that in his last election victory, the only area Durbin won was the Chicago area, & mainly Cook ("crook") County. The rest of Illinois voted for Steve Sauerberg, but Durbin still won 68-29.
No, you don't need to read and understand the Constitution to be a Senator. That kind of stuff is only required of anyone who wants to be a responsible citizen.
