Seems contradictory: Indian officials to remove all coconuts before Obama’s visit

We have to admit that when we saw a headline that said, “Coconuts removed in India ahead of Obama visit,” we thought it was some kind of racial insult.

You may remember how liberals taunted Michael Steele by calling him a coconut when he ran for the U.S. Senate in Maryland.

Coconuts: Taboo in Mumbai

In racial terms, of course, a coconut is a person who is dark brown on the outside, but white on the inside. And let’s face it, Barack Obama is the whitest brother in the history of brothers.

But no, India is actually removing coconuts from the trees. Real coconuts.

The BBC has the story:

Officials in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) have taken extraordinary measures to protect US President Barack Obama ahead of his visit. In their effort to provide maximum security in the run-up to his visit on Friday, they have removed coconuts which may fall on his head from trees.

All coconuts around the city’s Gandhi museum have now been cut down, an official told the BBC.

Every year in India people are injured or even killed by falling coconuts.
Mani Bhavan, where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his freedom struggle against the British, is among five places the US president is visiting apart from a school, college and hotels attacked by Islamic militants in 2008.

“We told the authorities to remove the dry coconuts from trees near the building. Why take a chance?” Mani Bhavan’s executive secretary, Meghshyam Ajgaonkar, told the BBC.

Luckily, Michael Steele is not part of the President’s entourage.

  • Wait do they do this for EVERY SINGLE head of state be it President, Queen or Prime Minister? Because if they do okay a bit extreme but fine... but if they don't... what the heck?

  • And after his visit to India, Barack is going on to his Indonesian homeland to visit a mosque. How many mosques has he visited so far? I haven't seen or heard about any churches.

    • He's going to a mosque, but he wouldn't visit the Sikh temple because he was afraid that photographs of him wearing a Sikh Dastar (turban) would be interpreted as proof that he is Muslim.

      • You mean like the one that he wore when he visited Kenya years ago?
I think Hillary's campaign was getting the rap for leaking the photo or something.

So, now that he's President 'n all, he's too good for the turban?

    • On another site, it was noted that if he really was born in Hawaii, then Hawaiian children are taught from a very young age not to stand under coconut palms.

  • Well, I have to say....and its true...the leading cause of deaths in the Dominican Republic are coconuts hitting people on the head. Several years ago, after selling one of my software companies, my wife and I move to the DR, bought a bunch of real estate, and a cafe...(the cafe, though fun, was a really stupid move). One morning, on a conference call with my team back in the states, a coconut fell out of a tree just behind me...the sound of it hitting the ground so close, scared the bejeezus out me! It really is dangerous....though I digress....

Frankly, I would have left the coconuts up there in honor of his visit. One nut whacked by another nut...what a gratifying concept!

  • so, let me get this straight. They made the entire country of India nutless just like Obama? This blind hero worship has got to stop.
